Here in Toledo, the local triple a hockey team always had a couple .05 beer nights a season. Couple times it got out of hand, when the fans started to throw chairs out on to the ice.
Little beer history-there was a local beer here in Toledo called Buckeye beer. They were the first ones, back in the early '60's that came out with a Lite beer. By the late '60's, Meister Brau bought them out, along with the name. Early '70's, Miller bought out Meister Brau, never made any more Buckeye, but put the Lite name on one of their recipe's, and hence, you have Miller Lite. Started out here in Toledo, almost 50 years ago. gypsyman

I remember my Dad drinking PBR and Busch in the 50's and early 60's when fishing.   those steel cans had a seam going down the side and yes...they had to be opened with a can opener.   He told me he used to have just one but it went overboard and him and a buddy had to improvise with a screwdriver for the rest of that trip.  After that he kept two on our boat, both tied to cork.

As teenagers a big seller for us were Mickeys because the beer bottles were real short and easy to contain in your coat pocket in the bleachers during H.S sporting events.  ;D Anyone remember Genesee cream ale?

Ginny cream came out first, but the one brand we sold more of, was Little Kings cream ale. 8 pk. bottles, but were either 7oz. or 8oz. bottles.
I can remember one story, about Henry Kissinger, when he was Sect. of State. You couldn't get Coor's east of the Mississippi, and when the plane landed in D.C., some over eager customs agent, or ATF agent made a big deal about 10 or 15 cases of Coors they had ''smuggled'' on to the plane. Kissinger, at a news conference was laughing about it, said he couldn't get it in Washington, so he didn't think there was any big deal about it. Let the poor man have his beer. gypsyman

Bleh.  I personally couldn't stand PBR when I tried it.  Just not my cup o 'tea :).  Usually if I'm going to drink beer I prefer wheat ales.  Leinenkugel, Blue Moon, Samuel Adams White Ale, etc.  Te be honest though I'm just not really that much of a beer drinker either way.  I try to stick with spirits (in moderation).  Scotch if I feel like drinking straight, or vodka and/or silver rum to mix.  With the economy issues though, I've been drinking less scotch and more cheap vodka (Sobieski isn't bad, and is cheap) + orange juice :D.

Lowenbreau Dark was a six-pack a night with Jack Daniels reserved for the weekends. That all ended in November 1984 when my first child was 5 months old. Just decided it was time to quit and I liked it too much to just be a now and then type, and so it ended.

Being moved quite often in the military I drank alot of the local beers from many places over the years, PBR was one of them along with Black Lable, Falstaff, Pearl, Shiners, Lone Star and several others.  Some,  like Bitburger Pils took some getting use to but I managed! 8)

Best I ever tasted was "Kumbacher Brau" from Kumbach Germany. They had been making it for about 450 years. At the time it was only about 3.00 a case if we promised to bring the bottles back. That was in 1953.

A little over 40 years ago an ex GI had a pizza place outside of main compound in Berlin.  Served hot peppers on every pizza, period.  One bite of pizza and you reached for the beer, (if you could call it that, high proof)  called Butzov.  This stuff climbed up the back of your head like a big black velvet cat, hooked its claws into your eyebrows and hauled your good sense right out of your head.  Oh lordy, it was good.  So good you reached for more pizza and then more beer.  If you were a nasty drunk or wanted to fight, 4 to 6 Bruinhid waitresses (about 6'+, 160-200 lbs, and honest to gosh braided pig tales) would hit you all at once and throw your sorry self out through the door into the street.  It never happened twice as they never let you back in.  If you were just plastered but courteous the same girls walked you out to the nearest cop and told them where your barracks were.  Cop called a cab for a free ride back to barracks and they had an understood  deal with the Army.  Get drunk, no problem, find a cop, no problem, cab home,no fare, no problem, report in smashed but sent by the cops, no charges,no problem, next days hangover, big problem.

Yankee1, I am in full agreement.  I was born near Kulmbach.  It is a medieval walled city and the beer hall is one interesting place.  I nearly drowned there one night as one of the locals was telling me that Roosevelt wanted to annihilate Germany. They really roll their "R's" in Kulmbach, so the sentence "Roosevelt wollte Deutschland vernichten" was good for about a half gallon (2 Liters) of Kulmbach's finest product.

In Korea ,
It was Crown and OB beer. and the spicy stuff was bulgogi and kimchee , The used formaldehyde in the beer as a preservative agent. When you were first in country you would pour the film off the top before you took a swig. 3 months into your tour you just chugged it down. Talk about hangovers. Only difference was when I was there , the country had a midnight curfew. Caught on the streets after midnight and you were arrested and turned over to MP's. So you would get drunk hook  up with a girl and head back to her hooch for the night.

I'm 65 but when I saw this post what memories it brought back. I haven't thought of PBR in years. I recall when I was around 8 or 9 years old  I visited my dad's auto repair shop. At the end of the day he was sweaty and dirty and he took out a couple of cold PBR's cans and we drank them sitting on a old truck tire. He told me if I told my mother he would "wop" me. It was the best beer I ever had.

Hey Scootrd
A year before Berlin I was waiting for OCS at Ft Lee.  Post movement NCO showed up with a .45 and orders to Korea, gave me 20 minutes to pack on a sunday with no one around even though I was charge of quarters for a training company.  I called home from seattle and told my parents I was headed to korea.  When I got there in keester deep snow they sent me to the repo depot, took one look at my 201 file and yelled "we got em"  My first Sgt made E9 in the IG section and he was sort of upset about misssing me at the airport by about 8 minutes and having to reclaim me from I Corps (?) I was shipped back less than 30 hours later to Ft Lee.  By then I had already had my first experience with the kimshee squat.  When I got back My first shirt had my 201 file credited with the shortest tour of Korea I ever heard of.  Guess Im glad I didn't try the beer, the kimshee sort of held my attention on the flight back.
