Hammer Extension on low hammer
« on: June 05, 2009, 10:16:46 AM »
Hello,

I have a question I hope someone can answer.  I bought an old topper 12 gauge shotgun with the case hardened frame and found a 20 gauge USH barrel on here for it.  It is only going to take some minimal fitting which I don't believe will be too much problem with the detailed guide you all have put together.  This old frame has the low style hammer with a transfer bar.  What is your experience with low hammers and hammer extensions.  It doesn't look like the extension will clear the open lever.  It will wear a 1.75-4x32 bushnell banner shotgun scope on xtra high weaver rings.

Thanks,
Matt

P.S. I would just try to fit an extension but the gun is not in my possession.

I replaced the hammer on my 35 Whelen Improved with an old style hammer which presented a problem when I mounted  the hammer extension, it either hit the back of the barrel release when it falls forward stopping it, or mounted a little higher on the spur it stops against the frame behind the hammer and won't allow it to be fully cocked, so I did a little reshaping on the back side of the barrel release to clear it and all is well.  ;)

Thanks Tim, I guess I'll get an extension on order from Brownells.

Thanks,
Matt

I dunno if Brownell's carries Uncle Mike's stuff, but it's a #2456, same as for a Ruger Blackhawk.

Well they do, but they are $15 a pop and I am planning on ordering the scope from optics planet so that works out perfect.

Thanks again Tim

I had the same problem with an old Topper frame.  All I did was put a 20 ga barrel on it and used another frame for the scoped rifle.  I'd just change frames.

Well I don't really have another frame.  I bought a cheap 12 ga used just for the purpose of building my dad a slug gun and this is the only frame I have for him.  So I think I'll just modify it to make it work.

Thanks,
Matt
