Another example of how messed up this world is.
« on: June 04, 2009, 09:59:55 AM »
I had to go to the emergency room this morning.  I could barely move and discovered I had a massive Kidney infection.  When I went to leave my truck wouldn't start.  I asked several people to jump me off and was declined due to the fact that it may hurt their battery.  I finally found someone to attempt it, but it didn't work.  I didn't have $ for a cab and Matt was at the house with the three kids and a two seater truck so I knew it wouldn't be possible to come and get me.  All of my family was either at work or unreachable.  I began the ten mile walk thinking someone would offer me a ride.  I would never accept a ride from a stranger, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

It was raining, I was still in a lot of pain, and it was a long walk.  I had multiple cars pass me as I was walking down a major highway.  Not one single person stopped.  There was at least three cop cars that passed.  The real kicker was when I made it to the cutoff road abot four miles from my house and my neighbor passed me.  I threw my hands up in attempt to stop him and he just kept going.  I know it isn't smart to pick up people off the side of the road, but geeze people used to have a little more decency.  I know I would stop for a nicely dressed woman walking down the road in the rain.  What about you?

I've jumped off people plenty of times.  If you do it right it shouldn't hurt a battery.  Did you ask anyone to take you to the hospital?  They might would have.  If we lived close by, and you would have called either me or my wife, we would have taken you and tried to jumpstart you.

I am sure in her condition it felt like 10 miles but it is only about 4.7miles from our house to the Hospital. As to people stopping... these days around here there are almost as many people walking as driving and I am not surprised no one stopped. I never thought she would have walked that far in the pain she was in... But I did use the GPS on her phone to track her journey to make sure she was ok and on track.

I spend alot of time on the road with my work. I have stopped countless times and helped many by changing tires giving rides or just letting them use my phone. It discusts me of how many people drive by without offering assitance. I have been offered money thanks and a date or two, the only thing I tell them is that I expect them to pass on the good deed.

I have a vision of you walking home in the rain while hurting and no one will stop and help........... The phrase "madder than a wet set hen" comes to mind. ;D ;D ;D I'm sorry I couldn't resist I just couldn't hold it back. ;D

I always try to help stranded motorist if I can. I figure it this way. I may be stranded someday and need help. It pays to help someone in need.

Heather I have to say that sucks for sure. I have many many times helped prople out on the road. I have changed more than a couple tires for women. They even offered money that I could have used at the time and did not accept it. Please take it easy and drink lots of liquads. Dale

Probably, but with a very good amount of caution. Sadly it is a testament to the times we are in. i have stopped for some people and picked them up when weather endangered their lives. On clear days I have offered to call someone or the Highway Patrol for some, others I picked up and took to nearest town.

The dangers are very real and honestly the one you trust may be just the one that takes your life.

Unfortunately Redtail is right. You have to be very careful, especial these days it seems.

Could you not have paid the cab fair when you got to your house?

I have given several folks jump starts over the years.  I have also offered to make a call for someone who was broken down on a few occasions.  I have given only a very few a lift.

Hope things improve quickly for you Heather.

I am sorry about your tough day Heather.  I hope the kidney issue clears up and you get to feeling better.

I don't know what it is about old age and doing more things at church and for folks at church, but I am getting more peace and joy out of offering help to others.  Last winter I "got the opportunity to" pull a guy up a snowy hill with my 4wd and I am glad to give a jump to folks.

Did you have your thumb out?
If it's someone I don't know I look for them to give an indication that they need a ride otherwise I assume they want to walk.

I jump people three or four times a week.  In fact so often I carry one of those lithium jump start batteries.  It's easier than pulling cables out.

Also here we help anyone walking that needs help.  During the winter if you indicate you need help and someone does not stop, take their license number turn them in and they will get a fine.  State law says you must render aid to anyone stranded in the winter.  In fact a few years ago a young man was found dead in the side of the road.  He had froze to death.  In his hand Troopers found two different license numbers.  Investigation showed that those people refused to stop.  Both people were from out of state.  Both did jail time, and received heavy fines.

I pick up men, women, and children, once or twice a month out on the highway.  Occasionally, I pick up a drunk, but they are nice and appreciative of the ride.  A few weeks ago I stopped and the man told me up front he was drunk and was hoping someone with a pickup would stop and give him a lift.  He said he was not feeling well and might get sick.  I was driving my Samurai, but I told him to get in anyway.  Once in he hung his head out the window.  when I got home I used the pressure washer to clean off the side of my Sammy.

People here are different than people in the states.  Or at least here in Fairbanks, not Anchorage.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

About 6 or so years ago, the wife had to take me to the local hospital emergency room. As it was late, are 2 boys were way past their bed time, and the wife had to go to work the next morning. So I told her to go, and when I was ready to leave, the hospital called me a cab. I didn't have any money, but when the taxi driver found out where I lived, he didn't have a problem taking me home, and I went and got him the money. Since we live out in the country, he figured I was good for it. He told me on the way out, if I had told him an address that was in in a questionable neighborhood, he would have just drove off. (never did find out what had made me hurt so bad, but it was in the lower back, and when I took Tylenol, it seemed to make it worse) gypsyman

We only have one cab company in town and it is in Anniston which is a good ways away.  They would want half up front.

Was today a better day?

Actually today was worse.  As you all know I went to the hospital yesterday with a severe kidney infection.  The doctor was concerned that I had such a bad infection at my age considering I don't do drugs, or drink anything but juice or water and an occasional gatorade.  I exercise regulary so there wasn't a clear cut reason for the infection.  After he sent me home he ran some additional test on my blood work.

I got a call from the hospital today and some bad news. My bloodwork revealed genetic markers for Polycystic Kidney Disease. I went in today for more testing and my kidney imaging showed multiple cyst.   It is a genetic disorder with no cure. Treatment includes a rich raw food diet, lots of water, and eventually dialysis or kidney transplant.

If one parent has it there is a 50% chance of it being passed down to a child. Of coarse I am concerned about my own health, but my heart bleeds for my children and the possibility that they may suffer this burden and pain one day.

Sorry to hear that, I have two brothers, and the younger one has had kidney stones the last 15 years and they come on anytime anywhere. I've seen him cry from the pain. Hope all goes well with you.
