Firing pin replacement
« on: June 01, 2009, 04:03:19 PM »
My buddy has a pardner shotgun that needs a new firing pin. I checked in faq's and help section and didn't see anything about replaceing the firing pin. It doesn't look like it would be that hard to do. I was wondering if anyone has ever replaced one and if it was a fairly simple task to do?

I haven't had to replace one, but I've removed it and reinstalled it, Brownell's sells it, or used to, dunno if H&R will, it's marked as restricted to gunsmiths only in the manual. Have him order the spring too while he's at it.

Just got an order from Brownell's. I had ordered some parts as spares and must have ordered the wrong firing pin. The one I got appears to be a shotgun firing pin, even though it was listed under the single shot rifle group.
Just looked at the website again to see where my error was and did find another firing pin listed (427-000-024) but it has a notice of "Dropped by Factory" and cannot be selected for ordering.
The firing pin I got is (427-501-671)

Is the shotgun firing pin the same physically, other than the diameter of the pin itself?

I am not sure. I called customer service a couple of days ago and the cs rep told me that it was kind of a crap shoot on getting the right size firing pin because so much stuff has been changed over the last few years. He told me to go to egunparts.com and order one from them. I thought this was kind of wierd.

Found this one on egunparts:
Item No. 279230A

Looks to be the correct one (for a Handi rifle anyway), at least in the picture.  :D

Bill

ps. If you can't find one for your shotgun, you know where one is... ;)

In fact, if you want the one I got by my error, PM me your name and address and I'll send it to you free of charge.

Well, my spare pin is the 427-00-024 which is .090" in diameter which must be a shotgun pin, rifle pins are .065" as near as I can tell without removing one.  :-\

Tim, the one I bought by mistake(?) measures ~.097" and the measurement I got off the one in my rifle is ~.063, at least the part that I can measure without removing it.

Tim,
Sounds like you got a plan going there. I never would have thought about doing something like that.

I contacted Brownell's via email asking about the correct firing pin for the Handi rifle. Here's their reply:

Item 427-000-142 should be the correct pin. The one we measured was .062 o.d. I hope this helps and thank you for the enquiry.

Thought about that too but the tip of the firing pin appears to have been case hardened, which might mean tempering, reducing the diameter down to the correct size, then attempting to re-case harden the tip. I'm not good enough that I would trust my own skills to attempt it. If it were something less critical than a firing pin, I'd probably try it.

I figured it would need to be annealed, tempering isn't hard, heat it cherry red, drop it in used motor oil, I have lots, if ya need some, let me know.   ;D

Thanks for the number but 427-000-142 doesn't work, comes back not found.  ???

Got another email sent back to Brownell's with a request on how to order the one they measured, if that's the only one they have...  ;D

Thanks Bill. When we find out about the rifle firing pins I may order a couple of each just to have on hand.

My email reply sent to Brownells:
I have tried ordering that firing pin online but the online order system will not work for that part number (427-000-024). It shows a notice "Dropped by the Factory" and has no place to add it to the shopping cart.

Well, the email request asking how I could order the part (427-000-024) since it couldn't be ordered online, came back with this reply:

You might want to contact H&R directly at 978-632-9393 and see if they could make a recommendation. Thanks again!
