cases for looong guns

Where does one get a case for a long flintlock (58")?

I'm looking for a "better" case, not just the standard Hudson Bay Blanket cases or suede leather with fringes.  I want a padded case that will actually protect an spendy semi-custom gun, while bumping around in the back of a vehicle.

Duluth Pack offers custom made fleece-lined cases, but they want $115 for 'em.

Here are some potential sources for you:
-some of the double, aluminum hard cases[airline approved] might fit-diagonally. Someone-I think-does make long hard cases for Sharps type rifles.[if I find the name,I'll pass it along].
-floating style shotgun cases[with closed cell foam]
-building the case with closed cell foam e.g. backpacker sleeping pads
I may be in your predicament sometime in the future i.e. fowler or fusil.
Have you checked muzzleloading specific websites?

Yes, most of the black powder supply places offer suede fringed leather cases or blanket cases.  Just a layer of thin soft leather or wool doesn't seem worthy for a gun that costs $800+.

You can get custom cases - aluminum air-travel type, but they cost around $245!  At that price I'd need a case to protect the case.

One of the cases on the market for the Sharps is a shooting box with stand-offs to hold the rifle solidly plus all the little accoutrements that go along with it.  I am considering building a case similar to the ones used with the old cap and ball pistols, where the cutout holds the gun with a cloth lining to protect it.  I think 1/4 plyboard or Masonite would make a good box and a couple of latches, hinges and a handle would make it complete.

If I am not mistaken Cabelas catalog offers a semi hard to hard case. I cant remember what catalog exactly but I do believe they offer one.

Black Jacque, try the Ace Company.  They sell several models of a padded, soft case which is good for transporting a Pa/Ky-sized rifle.  These are not suitable for shipping via airlines, but they work well for transporting by car.

Their web site is:  http://www.acecase.com/
Best always and make smoke,

long story short Dat's Who,
If $115 aint gonna give the protection ya want,,, then there is a thing that might help.
It's called a "needle and thread". :-) .  The best application and assistantance of the above source might be found at the local "Fabric Shop". close measurment of the rifle might lend an idea of the amount of "elk hide" needed to encase the "padded lining" for "sewing" a top line case for less than $115. An item also needed for this application is a "thimble". Or you could check auction arms, e-bay, or the local good will store.
good luck with your search :D

Johnt,

$115 will buy enough protection for my gun - that's not the problem.  The problem is $115 will buy a whole lot of other things I'd like/need/want.

The more I think about it though it doesn't sound too unrealistic to spend $115 for a case for a gun that costs 8 times that.

Try Cabela's, Midsouth or Midway.
Doskocil makes cheap plastic cases with egg-crate foam filling. They run about 53" long.
I ain't paranoid but every so often, I spin around real quick.--just in case

sounds like you'll either need to make your own or go custom. I couldn't find anybody that makes hard cases over 48" long........me I'd find a buddy with a table saw and dado blade, get some egg-crate and some red felt..........some nice hardwood and you've got a custom case.

we've all got it coming, kid.........
