30-30 handi
« on: May 28, 2009, 11:56:22 AM »
the 30-30 that i bought for my son is a great gun.im very pleased with it an thinking of buying one for myself.i finally scoped it with a swift premier 1.5-4.5 an at forty yards i could cover a 2 shot group with a nickel an at a 100yrds i could keep five shots inside of a 3 inch circle.im sure the gun is up to better accuracy but i dont think i am.i think i would need more power on a scope to do better at a 100yrds.this was with the federal blue box 150gr bullets.i do have a question though.im going to start reloading here soon, what are some good powders to use with the 30-30.im gonna use bullets that are in the 125-130 gr pointed.another question is there a powder that works with the 30-30 an the 30-06,my friend has a 30-06 an might be interested in reloading for it,an this way we could use the same powder to keep cost down.thanks Kawie

Varget works in just about any rifle.

Plus one on Varget. I buy it in five pound lots now.

The first powder I ever used in the 30-06 was 3031. I do not remember the load, but it would shoot cloverleaf groups at 100 yards using a 150 gr spire point. It was a load recomended in the set of Lee dies I bought for the '06. I still use 3031 in my 30-30.

I find I can use IMR 4064 for almost everything. I use it in 22-250, 45-70, and a few 30-06 I loaded for a friend. There may be better stuff, but 4064 and Trail Boss (for cast 45-70) are the only powders I have.

Several folks here suggested Varget to me, and I gave it a go.  It's my one rifle powder now.  I've used it in everything from my brother's 223 to my 45-70 with excellent results.  My brother's old Rem. semi auto 30-06 has had thousands of rounds through it, but it shot the best groups ever with Varget.

I have never used Varget in a 30-30, but I love it for my 223, 243, 270, 308, and my 30-06.
It may not be the best for ALL but it's a very versitile powder, depending on what load you are working.

I like 28 grains of 3031 and a speer 150 grain spire point bullet. Not for use in a tubular magazine.

I don't have a Handi or accessory barrel in 30-30 (but I sure wish I did!).  However, I have a 94 Ranger and a couple of barrels for my Thompson Contender in both rifle and pistol lengths.  I agree with most, Varget works great!  However, I use H-335 and have been for years.  It seems to work great in both the pistol and the rifle.  In the pistol I can keep groups in the 1 to 2 inch size at 100 yards (10 shots).  The rifle doesn't do much better but I don't expect too much more than that since my objective was to work up a load that works in both barrels.  I know it's not a traditional powder for the 30-30 but it seems pretty versatile for me.  Plus if it's a powder that works in the 30-06 as well, you might try it.  (in reference to your second question)

Another extremely verstilile powder is H4895. I'm down to 3 for rifles, that and IMR 4350 and H4831. Two for handguns W296 and W231. Coversa all bases pretty well
