Anyone use the 30-30 NEF/handi
« on: May 25, 2009, 10:45:36 AM »
To me this seems like "the" cartridge for the nef rifle..Its lower operating pressures would be kind to the action, and the rimmed case would be a natural for the ejector..Reamed to 30/30 AI would even be better with spire point bullets, low recoil but a very effective 250 yard rifle..But i ask what is your experience with a 30/30 nef..wayne

Lots of 30-30 threads here, it's one of the most popular and accurate H&R chamberings with factory ammo or handloads, I have two, one of them I hand reamed to Improved. With spitzer bullets, the improved version is good for deer to 300yds. ;)

I don't have an NEF but do have an older H&R .30-30. It's one of only two handi rifles I own the other being a Wayne York custom .25-20 made from what started life as a .22 Hornet. It too seems ideal for the platform.

I've taken prairie dogs to 150 yards with the .30-30 using the iron sights on it so yeah it's a pretty accurate rifle.

You can rent a reamer from one of the reamer rental sources, just do an internet search for reamer rentals, I rented one from a past sponsor last year.

This year in Alabama, I killed 2 does out of a group of 7 deer that came by my stand.  Two shots, two deer, about 120 yds out in a clearcut.  The Handi is great with spire pointed 150 gr bullets, I was shooting Speers over Varget powder.  It doesn't take all day to reload a Handi rifle, if you practice.  The 30-30 is my favorite caliber, after 45-70!

I love my 30-30!  I found mine at Jay's for $125 four years ago and since that time it has become my favorite rifle period.  I like a gun to be light and handy, and this one is in spades.  I put an old Leopold 4X compact on it and it is a great combination and has taken a couple of does here in Michigan.  You will enjoy a 30-30 much more than you would expect.  44 Man
