Correct buttstock for iron sights?
« on: May 24, 2009, 12:25:07 AM »
I located a NEF Handi in .357 Mag at a local pawn shop. Had been bubba'ed a little as the buttstock was shortened by about 2". It was scoped with, get this, a Nc Star 6X24X50 with 30 mm tube, and a red dot reticule! Talk about over kill!

Anyway, it was the .357 barrel with iron sights that was electro penciled on the stub to match the frame, so I snagged it. NP prefix serial number dates it as a 2000 model. $195.00 OTD.

I'll eBay the junk Chinese scope because I wanted it as an iron sight rifle anyway.

Got it home, removed the scope and base and it cleaned up well and has a spotless bore. I tried mounting it and checking out the sights, but the raised comb of the stock kept the sights from coming up high enough to align.

Has this buttstock been changed out? Surely so. NEF wouldn't send this out like that would they?

I had an old buttstock from a Topper 158 12 gauge I had when I was a kid but can't find it. I bet it would have been the perfect solution.

First of all, Welcome aboard, this is the place to be for info and parts for Handi rifles. I tried to send you an IM but perhaps you do not have enough posts yet to use the IM system. Send me an e-mnail if you want and perhaps we can work out a swap deal on the stock...And congratulations on the .357, you are going to like it....<><....:)

If I had to re-stock that rifle, I'd go with the pallet wood standard stock.  Hard to go wrong with it.

A while back I was looking for a light weight kind of walking around rifle so I ordered a .223 with the synthetic youth stock. I didn't care for the stock but I wanted the lightweight barrel with the iron sights. When I got it neither I nor any other adult male I have had try the rifle has been able to look through the iron sights. The comb is just too high. With a scope it's fine but that wasn't what I had in mind when I bought the rifle. It might be that you have a youth stock. LOP on the youth is 12 1/2" IIRC.

I'd take a look in the H&R Classifieds or post an a WTB or WTT ad for one, buying/selling/trading isn't allowed in discussion forums.  ;)

Any of the stocks except the Monte Carlo should work fine.  I have a Buffalo Classic stock set on mine.  They will work ok with a scope too but you have to rasie your head up a bit.

I just got the youth barrel added to the ADULT 30-30 synthetic stock, and there is no way I can use the sights either.
Haven't been able to reach customer service on the phone, waited over 1/2 an hour. It really needs a taller
front sight. Makes me mad. This isn't the only part of the order they screwed up.
