Well if I ever get everything straightened out and get my gun back from Ilion I'd like to ream it to 357 Max. I was wondering what kind of ranges I could use this on deer? I know the Mag is good to about 100 or so yards so would the Max be good to 150 or 200 yards? The area that I hunt is just a little 3 acre parcel of woods surrounded by a lot of corn fields. It's great earlier in the year but once the corn is down, the deer rarely get closer than 150 yards to the woods, but they come out in the middle of the downed corn like they're invisible. So I'm hoping the Max will give me the range to put them down.
thanks,
Ken
FPS and trajectory have nothing to do with the range that you could successfully use it on deer, Just be sure to use a hardcast bullet in the 200grain range and know where to hold the sights/crosshairs. If YOU can get that bullet to hit the deer I guarantee it will pass through completely, even at 800 yards with a rainbow trajectory!
Today too much hoopla is made over fps, in days past a hunter used the same gun if the shot was 70 feet or 700 yards, get the lead in the animal and it will drop!
This holds true for the 357 mag as well as the max. which is why I never bothered to ream any 357 to max. If one uses hp bullets then I could see some reason for it but when using hardcast, it is a moot point, after the bullet passes through an animal is has done all it can do, the number of broken branches beyond the animal have no impact on its death.
