New Stock
« on: May 15, 2009, 06:32:25 AM »
I have a 45-70 Handi and it shoots great.  One problem, the stock comb is too low.  I am looking at a Monte Carlo stock from Gunstocks, Inc.  Here is my question, the stock on the Handi looks like a pallet wood factory stock.  I need to raise the comb 3/8 to 1/2 inch for the scope that I have on it.  The question is should I order the Monte Carlo stock or the roll over stock?  Presently I have a slip on comb on it and it feels great and shoots even better.

I have several of the Rollover Stock that Gun Stocks Inc. sell, Since they are semi finished, you can sand/file the stock down to the correct heigth that you need.  I have had to remove just a little on my stocks to get them just like I want them. I have not used the Monte Carlo Stock that they sell, the one I have used is the Roll Over Cheek style and it also has a palm swell on the grip that has a nice feel toit also.

I put the factory synthetic Monte Carlo on my .45-70 and loaded 36 ounces of #4 shot in the stock.  I've got high rings and a 3-9X50 on it and it fits me perfectly.  It also shoots almost like my .22-250....very little felt recoil.  I'm more than pleased with the combination.  It's a little heavy to walk around with all day, but I don't do that much anymore.

Here's a very inexpensive and effective way to raise the comb on your stock. Place a slip on elastic cartridge carrier on your stock. Slide in a piece of foam between the stock and the cartridge carrier. You can pretty much get the thickness you need by adding thicker foam. If you cut the foam pieces about 1" shorter than the cartridge carrier you can't even see the foam. I try to use foam that doesn't stay compessed such as foam designed to use on top of crutches. You can buy them in most drug stores, works great, inexpensive, doesn't compress and you can do two stocks.

Good idea.  I have butt stock cartridge holders on all my Handis except the .17HMR Sportster, but the M.C. standard factory stock fits me well and I don't have to fudge it.

closed cell foam, like that for the cheap wal-mart camp pads, would be perfect. a cheap flip-flop, cut exactly to shape, might be more better ...
