Levergun in Africa
« on: September 15, 2003, 12:00:45 PM »
I just returned from a hunt in the KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. Brought along my Winchester M70 in 358 Norma and my Marlin 1895M in 450 Marlin.
The Marlin was loaded with the Hornady factory 350gr ammo.

This Impala was shot at 50yds and went down like it was struck by lighting, wich is kind of funny because it was raining and lightning all around us when I shot him. The first shot hit a 1 inch branc and cut a nice 45cal hole through it, but missed the Impala. Fortunately he didn't run far and I dropped him on the second shot.

My Zebra was shot at 50 yds again and went down on the first shot. We had been tracking the herd for a while, but they would never let us get close. As we sat and talked about the best way to approach them on top of a small ridge, they decided to come back towards us. I set up and found a gap in the vegetation and waited until I could get a clear shot. There was nly a 3 foot window where I had a clear shot and unfortunalty for this Zebra he decided to stop and let me take the shot.

you might have to change your handle to 450 Marlin now instead of 470 nitro express.   And with factory ammo!  I guess the factory ammo isn't so bad afterall.   Good pics. thanks for posting them.

Congrats on a successful hunt and great pics!

That's an interesting finish on you GG's stock.  Is it a custom buttstock and forend or did you just re-finish it? :D

Mark, next time I will definetly bring my 470NE, it is on a 15" Encore, but since most of the shots were 100yds and under I think it would have worked great.

Dutch, the stock is English walnut that I did myself (semi-inletted).

The scope is a Leupold LPS 2.5-10x45mm (30mm tube). The rings are EAW quick release.
