1100 barrel project
« on: May 08, 2009, 03:19:04 AM »
I have seen Remington rem-choke barrels w/ a cantilever scope mount for the 11-87 , but havn't seen anthing for a 1100. I thought about making one from an old 28" field barrel. Found a solder on mount a Brownells. I was wondering if anyone has played with this and what kind of results you may have had. Your input would be helpful. Thanks

Are you trying to make a cantilever scope mount turkey barrel?

Last weekend I saw a weird Hastings 1100 cantilever barrel, it had straight rifling up to the Rem-choke, which had twist rifling. I guess if you put a turkey choke in it, the straight rifled part would keep the wad straight.
I thought it was a regular slug barrel till I looked inside it. Couldn't really make heads or tails out of it, and the guy selling it didn't know either. ???
It looked pretty old and had been painted, maybe in the past, Hastings made what you are looking for?

Basically what I wanted to make was a cantilever  smooth bore slug barrel. I have a barrel with rifled sights, but  it's getting harder to focus with age. Trying to see if anyone has taken a longer barrel, shortened it, and used it for slugs. What would the accuracy be compared to a improved cylinder smooth bore slug barrel? Didn't want to screw up a good barrel if it wouldn't work. I have seen smooth bore Rem choke barrels for the 1100 but never a cantilever barrel.

I think B-Square makes a clamp-on scope mount that clamps onto the vent rib and extends back over the receiver.  I know they used to, but it's been a while so I can't say for sure they still make it.

Ever think of trying a youth barrel?  They're shorter (23"??), have a vent rib, and you could use any choke tube in them, including rifled.

Spruce,
I never thought of the youth barrel, good idea. But I have a old smooth bore non ribbed that I have already cut down.
Goss,
Thanks for the info, I hope mine will shoot great also. As far as the link, I don't have a clue how to do it. But if you go to the Brownells site  and type " remington 1100 scope mount" in the search box it will take you to it. I don't know if I going to use it though. I talked to a machinist buddy of mine about my idea and he thinks he can make one. Nice to have good friends. If it doesn't work out I'll be ordering one from Brownells. Thanks for the input.

rpharder,

Maybe I'm missing something but why not just have the receiver drilled and tapped?  Then you could use quick detach rings, take the scope off when you please, leave the base on and use your gun for other things.

It's not a ideal solution, but it might serve your purpose.

That would be an option as well as a saddle mount but I prefer to have the scope attached to the barrel so I could mantain the scope adjustments.

Thats good to know they are that reliable. If my project doesn't work out, I may have to try one.

[/img] This is worth looking into. The scope mounts are soldered to the barrel and the scope always stays with the barrel. It will take a LER or pistol scope and be more accurate than a cantilever mount. No holes or pins in reciever and scope stays sighted in.

Thats an old Hastings barrel that came like that new. I don't see why a gunsmith couldn't silver solder some mounts on.

I wonder why hastings quit making those?  If I remember correctly, that set up w/the BRI ammo has been super accurate for you hasn't it?

Alot of people say the H&R USH is very accurate, and where is the scope? Ah on the barrel! My 870 with cantilever mount isn't as accurate, but I'll fix that and replace with barrel mounts. I think Hastings quit making those mounts because of the cost of pistol scopes compared to regular scopes. The original BRI slugs even worked good in smooth bores, in fact it says so on the box.

Eye shot I found one of those exact barrels new in the box this summer at an old time gun shop I was scrounging through.I put a red  dot on it and put it on my 1100.I agree they must have went to the cantilever because of the price of ler and pistol scopes. But you can put a dot on them reasonable and that's what I'm used to in a slug gun so it worked out. Can't wait to try it.

I hunted with an Aimpoint red dot on that barrel for twenty years, alot of deer, and turkeys in the freezer from club turkey shoots with original BRI's. Last several years it wears a scope because of my eye sight. I wish I could find one for my 870!
