Handi-Rifle Question
« on: May 07, 2009, 06:52:09 PM »
I have a Handi in 500S&W that I got in a trade.  I assume it is the SB-2 receiver my question is do I have to send it back to get another barrel for it or will any barrel off an SB-2 fit it???

I have looked through the old posts and have got more questions than answers....

Thanks for any and all advice...

Take a look at the FAQ'S and Handi Basics that's where the good stuff is. We hide all the answers there to confuse folks. :)Kurt

Thanks for the reply Kurt.  I have read that, what I have found there is about as clear as mud....  I have seen the post that you may have to shim or that if it has more space at the top than at the bottom..... I didn't get an owners manual with it when I traded.  I guess I will talk to a gunsmith here in town and try to figure it out.  If not then there will be a 500S&W on the auction block....

You can download an owners manual from the H&R 1871 Website.  ;)

mtbadger, I concure that some of that info in the faq's is clear as mud for those of us who are not mechanical minded.  Don't be put off as some one can help with questions you may have, I am not able to do so.  My solution to the problem with fitting barrels to frames is to have 20+ frames.  The damn thing WILL fit one of them. ;D  Good luck with the 500.  DP

You best bet is to call H&R/Remington and inquire about the reciever.  If it is an SB2 frame it will handle most bbls short rimfires and a few others.
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

Isn't the 500 a relatively new chambering?  If the barrel chamber area has the last 3 digits of the serial from the reciever etched on it then the barrel was factory fitted and you have an SB2 reciever, I don't think they will put a 500 barrel on an SB1.

Its an SB2, no worries there.....

Barrels are not considered interchangeable. BUT, as many of us knows, many many times very little work is required to fit one. If you want a factory new barrel, the only way to get it is to return your frame to the factory and have one fit.

My 44 mag barrel and 30-30 barrel are for all intents and purposes interchangeable between their recievers. My slug barrel, Huntsman, and smooth bore 12 gauge (all originally factory fitted for the PArdner SB1 frame) all fit my BC frame.

THANK-YOU Gents very much for the links and the help.  I have found the etched numbers/letters on the barrel.  I think it is a 2007 model as the serial starts with HX.  I am wanting a .22WMR, .223, .243, 7MM barrel for it.  Then it will be my go to gun for everything.  (except dispatch when I am trapping)

Rimfire barrels won't work on a centerfire frame except for the discontinued Versa Pack barrel with offset chamber which has never been made in 22mag, but the 22Lr can be rechambered.

No mags, they never went into production, there are two 7mm chamberings tho, 7mm-08 and 280 Rem, the 26" barrel on the 280 with handloads will get you into 7mmMag velocities.  ;)
