50mm scope too big for an H&R?
« on: May 07, 2009, 03:23:15 PM »
I just got a great deal on a Bushnell Elite 3200 5x15x50 with sunshade. I was wondering if anyone has put this size of scope on an H&R? If so, how did it fit? My rings are tall enough but I am worried that the extra weight of the scope may cause the rail to flex when shooting.

Anyone have any info?

Thanks

Dsrtrat    I have an old Tasco 3x9x52 mm Eoro Class [one of the best ever made Tasco scopes] on my 270. It probably is one of my better shooting Handies. There has been no problem at all. You will be pleased with that scope that you have. I used a set of Warne permanent mount rings. The high rings allow for good clearence. You won t be unhappy with this set up at all.      Jim

I have 50mm objective scopes mounted on two of my handis.  Leupold high rings on one and medium on my ultra varmint.  The medium rings worked on this rifle but not on the other.?

I've got 50mms on all but two of my Handis, most with sun shades, cause my old eyes need all the help they can get.  I never had any prloblems with any of them except the .30-06.  The factory installed scope mount shot loose in less than 50 rounds.  It ticked me off at the time, cause I had to take it apart Lok-Tite it, put it back together and re-sight it in.

Every thing flexes; even pushing your finger against a barrel will make it flex. The key is to have it return to the same point after flexing. Most times the flex is not perceivable. Yes, the mount will flex, it will flex with any scope on it. Will a heavy scope make the mount flex more than a light scope - no doubt. But will it flex to the point of not returning to its original shape/position - highly unlikely. Pay attention to mounting screws - making sure they fit the mount well and are tight and stay that way. If you take care of that detail, you will have not worries. Good Luck and Good Shooting

If it helps you sleep better at night, you could always get the Warne Maxima Steel base for it. I put one on my .243 Fluted Ultra and never slept better.  ;D
