Savage Model 40VH, What's it worth?
« on: May 07, 2009, 01:15:56 PM »
I looked at a new Model 40 VH  in .22 Hornet priced at $459. As soon as I picked it up, I immediately noticed that the front scope base was not installed parallel to the bore, it was canted about 1/64" across its roughly 7/8" width. I would certainly not mount a scope with that kind of misalignment. I would think the front base needs to redrilled and tapped a bit forward or back in new holes properly aligned. What would be  fair offer for a brand new gun that needs that kind of work. I would do the work myself.

Well, in my mind from a business standpoint, the rifle is junk. I would not think its worth the manufacturer fixing it. To the dealer, it might not be worth sending it back to the manufacturer. Although the dealer probably does not care as he might get full credit for it. If the price is right I will pick it up and fix it.

I am not sure what exactly my Model 40 is - It is stamped "Model 40 cal 22 Hornet" and I gave $425 + tax for it at a small local dealer who is usually high; I had to talk him down to that price. I think I could have gotten the same gun at Walmart for well under $400, but would have to order it and go through their hassle. Only you can decide what a fair price would be. How easy is it for you to correct and how much is it worth your time? Only you can answer that. If it was me I would pass on it, there must be others out there that are not afflicted with a mount that is off center. But that is your decision - isn't it. Good Luck to you.

You could pick a brandy new one up for that price! They are great rifles, no doubt about it, just not that one!

mcgiiver: Savage would most likely fix it for him and cover the cost all the way through. The only MABYE in the situation would be him not being the original owner. I sure they would be a standup company (as always) and do him right if he were to buy that rifle. Altho' the general consensus is to shop around.
