What do you use your 44Mag for ?
« on: May 05, 2009, 04:35:50 PM »
I just got my second one(last one long gone but holding dear to this bird) and love it in a Handi rifle.
It packs a punch but is very managable...

So what do you guys use your 44 Mags for?

Althou I have one I must admit I dont use it much. In years past, I had a couple revolvers so chambered as well. Those where traded off for other "toys". Its a great caliber that many love dearly.

These days, I find the grand old 45 Colt fills all my big handgun needs. ;D

For my 44 needs i use a Hunter's Supply lead cast 240 gr RNFP (round nose flat point) pushed by Win. 296  and as of yesterday had zero issue keeping it on the steel 10" x 6" steel triangle at 100 yards.. Which always makes a reloader happy  ;D

To make things even better i figured i would try some of the factory Win 240 gr jacketed soft points and low and behold they are striking to the same point of impact as the cast lead rounds , Making me even happier with my little shooter ..

And like CW i too love my 45 long colts , Though mine arent capable of achieving the same velocites that you can in the handy rifle ... But it doesnt make me love my Uberti lever and six gun any less  :P

I have two 44 mag handi rifles. One is a newer bore that shoots any load/bullet within a paper plate at 100 yards ,with a 4x Simmons deerfield scope .Used it to get my deer last season. The second one is one with a oversize bore and a red dot .This one is a little more picky in the load department.I have some 240 gr swc sized to .431 and some 300 gr. wfn  sized to .432 that are shooting minute of bear at 30 to 40 yards. This one is going to Canada in August for my first bear hunt over the border.Tried Maine last year never use that outfitter again .Love the caliber was the first one I reloaded .

Wayne24,

I know next to nothing about 44 mag rifles. But I'm surprised to hear you say you can get paper plate accuracy at 100 yards. Ive heard this round compared ballistically (out of a rifle barrel) to the 30 .30 Winchester, but with paper plate accuracy it would hardly compare, in practical terms.

Surely you could get better groups - like maybe 3 inch groups or something? Or were you just using a figure of speech?

I'm just curious. And no offense intended.

My 44 mag Handi is a new style bore and it easily beats 3 inch groups at 100 yards.

The new 44mags are very accurate, the pre-Marlin barrels were terrible unless .432" cast bullets were used and those that reamed them to 445 Supermag got decent accuracy, but the Marlin made barrels shoot everything equally well,  mine shoots great with Leverevolution factory ammo and my old eye on a peep sight at 100yds.  :D

I bought one for my son when he was 7 last year for a lower recoil deer rifle. Started him out shootin 44 specials. He has no problem busting soda cans with it. He hasn't got a shot on a deer yet but I figure it would be plenty big enough for whitetails plus the ammo is still in supply around here ans I have a friend that will reload for us pretty cheap.

I really like my my 1894 Marlin and it has a special place... in the back corner of the safe.  I haven't shot it for 20 years. When my boys were young they liked to use it because of the light recoil.   Maybe if I ever have grandkids  I can start them out on it also.

Just saying that any load I use will hit within a paper plate with out adjusting the scope. Most loads within 3 inch groups at 100 yards if I do my part. One group might be at the top of the plate and one could be in the middle or bottom.I was just using a paper plate as a reference. Very good shooting gun.It shoot both cast and jacketed bullets very well.No offense taken ,.Hope I explained myself better.

Minute of pie plate accuracy;

Place a paper plate, usually 9"-10" on a target at 100 yards. Standing off-hand, fire and place 3 to 5 shots on the plate as fast as you can.

If you can do this consistantly, you are ready for a successful hunt. ;)

I shoot everything in my .44 rifles from round balls to a 470 grain wide metplat bullet and get great accuracy with everything. Some guns won't give good accuracy with over a 300 grain bullet due to having the wrong twist to stabilize the bullet.

I personally plan on taking mine out it the woods this deer season... after working up a load for it that is. So far I have been getting everything ready that I need, and about finished. Shot some factory fodder through it and it's a great shooter with a lot of potiential.
I have yet to try any 44 Special though.... how do your 44Mags like the Specials?

we always shoot offhand so I can't say much about grouping but the kids and have have a great time with the specials. We went out last fall and busted some small pumpkins at about 50 yards and soda cans at 30. I figure that if a 7 year old and an 11 year old can do that consistently with open sights then my handi likes the specials pretty good.

My 44 mag Handi is a new style bore and it easily beats 3 inch groups at 100 yards.
I have three, two for my Grandson's and one for my Wife, and all three will shoot 1.5" at a 100 with several factory loads.

I shoot 44 specials in all my 44's. And they shoot just fine in my Handi/44.

You could also use 44 Russians or 44 Colts, if ya hand load. ;)

I don't have one, but with this Handiholicism, it's on my want list. ;)  I don't know if it'll do any more than the .357 Max, but I "need" it.  This really is awful ::)  With all the deer rifles I own, if I killed one deer a year with one and used another the next year, I'll be dead before I'd get back around to the first one.........but, a guy can't have too many rifles.
