Found a .44 mag on a SB2 frame
« on: May 05, 2009, 08:17:41 AM »
I was at a local spoting goods store last night and found a .44 mag that is on a SB2 frame with iron sights. They also had 3 other .44 mags that are new manufacture, on SB1 frames, and have the new serial numbers from Remington. They wanted $249.99 for the new ones. They wanted $224.99 plus 10% off for the SB2 frame. I don't need a .44 mag but I fugured for the price and the frame I would put it on layaway and pick it up in a couple of weeks. Not sure how accurate the .44 mag is but i Guess I will find out.

Unless you plan on shooting .432" cast bullets, you don't want any 44mag made before 2007, they had oversize bores that won't shoot jacketed bullets well at all, Marlin started making the barrels in early 2007, so if it's got an NX or HX prefix, you're good to go, anything before that I'd recommend you pass on it.

Thanks Tim. I already checked and it has a serial number that starts HX336. Do you think this will be a good one?

Tim;

I have an NW prefix 44 mag. made in 06 and my barrel slugs .429". I must have a good one, it shoots both jacketed & lead very well.

It's hard to tell when exactly the first rifles that got Marlin made barrels was, but it's safe to say you'll get a tight bore on a 2007, can't say the same for all 2006 rifles tho, you did good snakeman.  ;)

Was just out shooting my SB1 44mag today and loving it ... I think i'm gonna commit to having a professional finish put on this little shooter ... Though i dont know if it will stop me from getting one of those nice lil' marlin 44's ;)

 Great little shooter with factory or my W 296 RNFP cast handloads ( both 240gr.)  , And both jacketed and cast go to the same place @ 100  ;D

  Couldnt be happier with it ,
