Finally bit the .357 Max bullet
« on: May 04, 2009, 05:01:42 AM »
I found a nice .357 Handi this weekend at a very good price and sent the barrel to my gunsmith friend Lyle at Dick Williams Gun Shop in Saginaw to be reamed to .357 Max.  I found ammo at the ammobank.com, 180 gr. JHPs.  Now I can't wait to get it all together.  He's charging 35 bucks to do the job, so I figured by the time I rented the reamer and paid the postage, I might as well have him do it.  The Max may just be my deer rifle next Fall...........that's if I can put my .45-70 down.

Jay, Lyle Mc (or maybe Mac, can't ever remember) Gregor is the gunsmith there, and he is GOOD.  I've known him about 20 years.  Yes, He's off of M-13, Houlihan Road East 1 block , and Cole north to 4985.  Phone is 989 777-1240. Lyle used to be up here wid da Yoopers at Hilltop in Newberry, then he got a dose of Trollitis and moved below the bridge.  He is superb, and I think Dick made him a very good offer.

I didn't realize you were so close.  We'll have to get together and burn some powder.

DP, I'd do one and see.  I wasn't doing it with having only one barrel because of the jump with .38s and mags.  All three .357s I've owned have been super shooters.  I didn't want to take the only one I had at the time and mess it up.  Now, if the Max doesn't like Mags or .38s, I've got one that does.

I'll post a range report on both if I can ever figure out how to get my camera's software to fit a picture here.

I guess I gotta say, The .357 is the shootenist Handi to come down the pike.

Pete, look for a "resize" feature on your camera...the file(pic) is too big...you need to use lower resolution

Nice Pete, that's great to hear. Get us a range report!

I'll be shootin' her the minute I get it back together and I'll post a report.  You guys are great ;)

There seems to be so much interest in the Max, it makes you wonder why Remingdingdong discontinued the ammo.  Maybe we ought to do some lobbying in that direction.

Zoner, thanks I think I found it.  The camera is new, and I haven't gone through the whole manual yet.

Thanks, Tim, I found it.  I've got to try it yet, but it looks as though the camera will do it when I reset the resolution and take the picture.  The resizer will be great on existing photos.

Is $35 the normal rate for Lyle to do rechambers?  Just wondering because Saginaw is only about 40 minutes away.

I haven't got a clue.  That's what they wanted for a .357 Mag to Max.  Their phone number is posted above.  I don't know what you want rechambered, and Lyle may or may not have the tools.  I'd call them and find out.
