Another reason to buy a B.C.

  Ya know I like those things, they are just purty. I love that long barrel. The straight checkered walnut stock is classic. I just really don't need a .45-70. Here in Fla. I find that my .44 has all the power I need for anything. I've yet to recover a slug from anything I've shot with it.

  BUT... now I find something that puts a whole new spin on things.

    I mean how about the ability to have a nice looking long barreled .22 target rifle. Now that's a horse of a different color.

  Has anyone tried one of these in a Handi Rifle?

  One fellow I talked to said after he put one in his Sharps he hasn't taken it back out of the gun for months, but continues to shoot it as a .22.

Well if you just wanted the look of the BC and don't need/want the 45-70 then why not pick up a 22 Sportster, buy the BC stocks from Remington, swap them out on the frame and sale the synthetics to make up a little on the price of the BC stock set? Granted you wouldn't have the colored frame...

  What I really like is the long barrel. I love the way they seem to hang when you're shooting off hand.

I hunt, and I don't like the long barrel.  If it would fit my 22" barreled Handi, I'd consider it.  The .45-70 is perfect for FL hunting.  With Remington 405 grain factory loads it's about like hunting with a muzzleloader or a .30-30.

I gotta say something here.  I own and shoot muzzleloaders, I own and shoot 30-30's and I own and shoot 45-70's.  The 45-70 with the factory Rem 405's doesn't hurt, but it damn sure recoils harder that a 30-30 or a muzzlestuffer!  We got to many new people joining the Handi family to keep feeding them this line of crap.  The factory 405's and 300's do "kick" but with a good cheek weld pulled tight into the shoulder and a recoil pad, it ain't gonna hurt most people if they don't get scope bit.  I got boys 20 and 23 that will won't shoot it again, and a 15 year old that likes to shoot it and my 444's.  Everybody perceives recoil different, but to tell people "It don't kick" is just plain wrong.  DP

I barely notice the Remington 405 grain factory loads.  They are no worse than the .30-30 IMO.

I think the 405 grain loads are much less than a 30-30 of comparable weight!

No they dont seem to have much punch at all but the LEs are a slightly different story, but still not real bad,

Anybody chrono the 405gr Rem factory ammo? If it runs what Rem says it does at 1330fps, the Lyman 48th says 33gr of IMR4198 will get 1321fps under the 405gr Rem, that calculates to 12.7lbs recoil in a 7.5lbs rifle using 33gr powder. They list two test barrel lengths, 24" and 30" and don't say which they used for this load, Hawks lists the Rem factory load at 18.7lbs recoil.

I get 2330fps with the 150gr Rem 30-30 ammo, Lyman list 28gr RL7 @ 2350fps for 8.79lbs recoil, Hawks lists it a bit faster for 10.6lbs
recoil.

Hornady LE ammo runs 2025fps in a 24" Ultra barrel.

O.K. everyone, sit down and laugh at me.  My Marlin levergun 336T, straight grip shooting 170 gr. .30-30 Win. Silvertips kicks the snot out me.  I can shoot my Handi 22 inch .45-70 with 325 gr. Hornady LEs with half the pain.  I think it is mostly in the fit of the stock.

I know it is the fit of the stocks.
I have used the PMC 350gr FNSP with a published muzzle velocity of 2025 and still consider the recoil about par with a 3" 12 ga #4 buck load from a 1300 Winchester.
The 300gr SPs in 405 in my 1885 Win High Wall is about the same as the 45-70 PMC 350gr FNSPs.

The only Handy I have that I think has much recoil is my 450 Marlin, and it's still not bad in a Handy.
