H&R break action pistol?

I found this on Auction arms just looking around.  Was this a production frame or do you think it was custom?  Legal?

  I'd say there's a reason why just the receiver is for sale. Most likely in it's original configuration it would now be listed under the class of a sawed off shotgun. Legal if the proper paperwork was done at the time, but that time is now long gone.

  Years ago Ithica made what they called an "Auto Burgler" which was a double barreled 20 ga.shotgun with a similar pistol grip and something like a 12" set of barrels. If came right from the factory that way. Years ago when I was a LEO our Dept. had one that had been confiscated. They looked like they would be very handy indeed.

It was a production gun.  Its called the "Handy Gun".  Handy spelled with a Y on the end, not the "Handi" we have today.

Most ended up being regulated by the NFA as a AOW due to being a smoothbore pistol.  The receiver of such would still be regulated as a NFA gun if it was once registered as a AOW even if you put a rifled barrel on it.  If it was registered as a NFA gun, it can be struck from the registry and equipped with a rifled barrel, or a smoothbore barrel 18"+.  However it would still have to be over 26" in length with a smoothbore, thus requiring maybe an even longer barrel.

Now if that Handy Gun receiver was on of those from H&R with a rifled barrel originally and never registered as a AOW - its just a common Title I handgun just like most other pistols.

Why doesn't H&R make a Contender style pistol?  I think they could sell the dickens out of them seeing as how expensive TC is.

Manufacturing handguns has higher liabilities and excise taxes involved.  Back in the late 90's, or maybe when Marlin bought H&R, it was decided to have no part of the prior handguns or future handguns due to civil liabilities.  Marlin or the prior owner only bought the long gun assets, patents and copyrights.

Handguns + H&R is a deed issue.  Even Remington has a very minimal interest in handguns because of what I explained.

On another forum I saw a link to a boxed set of break action Handy pistols.
I forget what auction site but remember the price... buy it now $3500.00

If a individual were able to purchase a new "virgin" receiver or you could make one, you can have it transfered on a 4473 as a pistol, it would be possible to build a .410/45 long colt pistol using a H&R receiver and one of the rifled barrels as offered by NEF/H&R/remington.

For some reason I don't think H&R would sell a virgin receiver to an individual and for some reason I don't think it would be legal even then to have a 410 barrel on it making it a short barreled shotgun.  the only way I have heard of that being legal is if it was a destructive device or an AOW, but I have been wrong once already this year, just ask my girlfriend.  Does it cost anything for the transfer?

If the barrel was rifled you could.  The 45/410 barrels are rifled...  They are a .452cal rifled barrel with a long chamber that allows .410 shells.

The shells have no bearing as to the legality, only the bore type.

Agreed! contender, taurus and a couple of other companies make 45 LC/410 pistols. The problem would be going from a rifle/shotgun to pistol as it would change the status of the gun to either a SBS or SBR, however going from a pistol to a rifle is no problem.

I have a 30 cal browning that I built and  marked as a pistol, ever see a beltfed 8mm mauser pistol with a 9 inch barrel ;D Definatly not a one hander. Incenidentally, a good friend of mine is working on a bolt conversion for the 1919a4 to convert it to .410 shotgun. It will be the first beltfed .410 that I know of....

AOW transfer is 5.00
SBS/SBR transfer is 200.00

You can build it yourself and register it on a form 1 or if it has been built by a manufacturer its registered on a form 4.

There were a couple on Gunbroker last month I think one was just the frame and claimed no bbl the other was a complete I think 22... thing was there was also a lonely what was claimed to be a H&R short 410 bbl floating on the same site for sale that just happened to have the same sellers address don't think he had the proper papers or much for brains .Kurt

I just saw the frame is still for sale but the bbl is no where to be found any more.

  Well I for one would like to see a picture of a belt fed 8mm pistol. that would go down in the books for sure.

  There was a company several years ago that was buying blank receivers from Remington and building the EAA Witness Protection shotgun out of them. It was a pump with a 12" or so barrel. Sold as an "Any Other Weapon" the tax stamp was only $5.


  In this day and time I would think that if H&R were willing to market something along those lines it would sell like hotcakes. At least until the feds pulled the plug. I know I'd like to have one, but only if I had the paperwork.

OK here is the pic of the beltfed 8mm pistol, but what the hell else would you call it :o. Actually, it by ATF standards is not a pistol nor is it a NFA item as it is semiauto and it is over 26.5 inches. but the 1919a4 is neither considered a rifle or a pistol just a firearm (yes I have a ATF letter stating this)
