Winchester 55 Need Advise
« on: September 13, 2003, 07:04:29 AM »
I'm considering purchasing a Win 55 in 30/30 and have a number of questions.  Date of manufacture is 1926, serial #4382, takedown model.  The bore is in very good condition.  Wood is nice but 'distressed' as they say.  Most of the bluing is worn off but generally speaking it is in nice shape and smooth as can be.  Even the trigger is very nice.  I have it on hold pending feedback from you experts so please give me a hand.

Asking price is $750.  Is that about right, high, low?

Would you leave it as is or restore it?  The shop owner is pretty knowledgable and also insistent that it would be crazy to reblue etc.

Thoughts?

singlefan : $750  is the price of a 55 in 80% condition you and the seller will have to come to a agreement as to what percentage the rifle is in and then maybe we can be of a little more assistance, as far as reblueing I wouldnt do it myself as I like the older rifles to have the old worn look.   JIM

How would you define 80%?  Is that 80 pts of original?

80% is almost brand new if it is worn vary much it will go down in condition vary quickly by what you have described on the one you are looking at it is in the 40 to 50 % range and the blue book on it is $475 to 525.   JIM
