Update Grandpa's 340 C
« on: April 28, 2009, 09:26:15 AM »
Picked her up yesterday and gave her a proper cleaning and oiling. Her bore is PERFECTION from breech to muzzle and her trigger is very good( if you're used to milsurp triggers a 340 will not offend you).As today was very windy I decided to stay at 50 yards. I was shooting some older reloads, a 150gr Winchester Power Point over 37gr of BL-C2 in neck sized Rem cases with CCI 200 primers. Her first 3 were 2 1/4" then the next 5 were 1 1/4 , 7/8 , 1 1/16 , 7/8 and the last group was a 5 rounder at 3/4".  ;D Dont remember her being that accurate...and these groups were open sights. She fed fired and ejected reliably and politely.I can't begin to describe how GOOD that first shot felt! This rifle was ( is) my first centerfire, the first rifle I carried in the deer woods and as far as centerfires go , she is the last. After 27 years of wondering and regret, this has been a very fine day and a very fine reunion. Those of you missing a gun you never should have parted with , dont give up hope! You NEVER know!

Sounds like you never missed a beat...I hope you're able to take a deer with her again.
Good Luck!

A couple questions. The magazine fits VERY tightly, almost tug of war. Is this normal? I dont remember it being that way, but who knows? Its been almost 30 years... Also the 2nd round out of the mag jams, with blunt bullets, against the top of the chamber mouth.1st and 3rd are fine. The offending round sits higher in the mag than the other 2 and I'm kinda confused by it.No obvious mag damage.Lastly , the extractor has alot of end play on the bolt.Doesn't effect extraction ,but it does give me alittle concern.Normal? It goes back and forth an honest 1/16".Other than that she's a perfect lady. Not fussy either, she is accurate with everything I've tried so far AND is the only rifle I've had which shoots Speers accurately!
I'm trying to get a general idea on when she was made. She's a Chicopee Falls marked 340C but has no peep sight , swivels or checkering.Stuff I've read says she should have all 3.Her stock is walnut and she's factory drilled and tapped. She has the SP in an oval proof stamps on bolt handle and barrel, ahead of the lock nut , and caliber is spelled "calibre". Barrel length is 22 inches.I saw 1 reference to the 340C being an 18 inch carbine. No sereal number tells me pre  '68, and uncheckered stock seems to be pre '65. Any ideas and help greatly appreciated.
