My Pack in Gun is Done for Now
« on: April 27, 2009, 01:23:19 PM »
Well I am feeling pretty good about my new pack gun.
All I need now is a tag. :-\
What we have here is a Thompson Contender
chambered in 7-30 Waters with a 24" barrel and
a Pentax Pioneer scope which I bought 2 of from Doug at
Cameraland at a super price.
http://cameralandny1.reachlocal.net/optics...age=pentax89614
It will be upgraded later but is a great scope for the $
Total overall length is 37-1/2"
A Harris short bipod and weighing in at well under 7-1/2#
May also pick up another set of wood that does not shine so much while hunting.
Plan on trying to use Sierra 7MM 130gr Spitzers #7250 since I have over 1000 of them
but will no doubt be testing the Berger 140gr VLD and others.
Now to get to the Range  ::)

Some of you guys may recognize your old hand me downs ;D

Ought to get it done for you Mike.   Let us know how it shoots - good luck this fall.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Thats a fine looking outfit.  If it shoots as good as it looks you'll have a tack-driver for sure.

If it were me, I'd try and find a chunk of synthetic for a stock so I didn't have to worry about the shine, or messing up your nice one.  My packing guns look pretty well used, rode hard and put away wet.

So, what kind of "packing in" are you doing?

I am going to do something about the stock for hunting.

The Arizona game and Fish Dept. is on a big kick to provide more opportunity
and less quality hunts.
They are taking the Deer and Elk hunts out of the rut and moving them to
less productive time so they can provide more tags and have the same harvest objective.
The problem with this is the number of hunters in the field at one time.
So it has come to where a guy has to pack in several miles to get away from the crowds.

Ain't it great having all these little problems we need to work out? The only stock set I have for my carbine is the factory Rynite which is very light, noticeably different in weight and handling than any of the laminated stocked carbines I handled side by side to my little tuperware setup. It's great to carry and to shoot from a rest but to me, could use a little more weight when shooting from field positions or snap shots. A 21" 7TCU barrel is my only tapered barrel and I haven't weighted the rig but am guessing 6 lbs MAYBE with a Burris 6X Mini. I like the handling characteristics of my 22" and 24" bull barrels a bit better. I like the thumbhole design  but all those I've handled seem heavy in the butt. I think a Rynite thumbhole would be just about the right. I like the 7TCU but the 7-30 calls me too. Maybe since you got yours already the rest of us will have a chance  :)

OK, here's something I don't understand:  Thumbhole stocks.

It's not just on T/C's, it's all firearms.  I just don't get the allure to a thumbhole stock.  Maybe it's because I shoot left-handed and most thumbhole stocks are biased toward right handed people, but even on the ones that aren't, I just don't get the appeal.  Is there some logical reason to prefer a thumbhole stock that I'm just not aware of, or is it an aesthetic thing?

Felt recoil is a little less because your arm becomes effectively a part of the stock. As the gun recoils, it recoils into the web of your thumb as well as into your shoulder.

May I ask where you got the wood on your very good loking rifle. I have only had TC pistols and today I picked up a 204 Ruger Encore barrel and now I need a buttstock and forearm for it and when I seen yours... Lets just say there is drool on my shirt. NUF SAID. ;D

Thank you and sorry about your shirt ::)
I am not sure who made this set.
I bought it off a member here.
There a many manufactures that make sets like this
including TC.
I also just picked up a 23" 204 barrel.

Nope. Sorry. That stock is going to have to go.

To me!! ;D

That would be the perfect stock for my woods carbine.

I really like the looks of that stock and forend! Any interest in trading for a factory synthetic? Or an out right sale?
Thanks, Craig

Your stock and forend set has the look and lines of an old Fajgen(spelling?) set that was discontinued :( unfortunately.

Yowser Hop, I think you're right.   Didn't notice it the first time I blew through this thread, but the banana forend gives it away as a Fajen set.

I never onwed any TC carbine sets, but did have a couple of their "Big Grip" sets for Contender pistols (ugly as sin, but the push/pull system worked).   Also several of their XP-100 pistol stocks (still have a couple of Victroy color laninates and one AAA Walnut), and many rifle stocks for various rifles I owed over the decades when they were still in business.   Their laminated TC/XP-100 sets only came in Coffee, Midnight, Victory and Camo colors (and the XP-100 in three different barrel profiles) if I remember right.

Discontinued is too polite a word for what happened to the great Reinhart Fajen company (whose customer service BTW was even better than TC's).   Larry Potterfield (Midway USA) bought them out, parted out and sold the equipment.    IMO Richards and Boyds still do a very poor job of trying to replace the Fajen quality that was matter of fact.   Battenfeld did offer some Ruger 10/22 and Mauser stocks under the Fajen name, but I think that's about all that is left.

Packed away out in storage somewhere is an old Fajen catalog that is still fun to peruse every time I come across it.   So is the old Herter's catalog packed in with it.     Sure miss those two companies.

BTW Mike, makes your set very collectable (at least to old timers).   FWIW, the last time I sold a Fajen XP-100 laminated stock on auction (approx 7-8 years ago) it brought $350, and the last Big Grip (grip only, no forend) about the same time got $200.  I don't care much for the Victory color these both were, but some folks must.

Damb, I wish I had not drilled and added the swivel stud :'(
Thanks for the info though.
Are you sure you would not like to move into my guest room :D
As always, you are a ton of valuable info ;)

SB, thank you very much and I will never sell it.
I love it and it will not see field use, just range use.
You did a fine job finishing it also ;)

That being said, I have an add in Contender classifieds
looking for a cheap hunting stock/ forend :)

I wouldn't worry too much about the swivel stud Mike.   Common upgrade done on most TC furniture (very few of my custom and factory wood pistol grip/carbine stock sets didn't have them installed).

The best way to know everything about dirt is to have been around using it when it was made.    ;)     That applies to TC's and everything that was made for them as well.   Value is in the eye of the beholder, so if it has value I'm glad to have helped.

As a lefty, I think I'd much prefer that stock setup over your original (though the original sure was purdy).  That's also a gorgeous set of wood you've got on the pistol hanging on the peg board.  What, exactly is that pistol setup, if you don't mind me asking?

Great stock - I love that color combination.
