Most comfy grip???
« on: April 23, 2009, 09:44:26 AM »
I am already thinking of starting a new stock project and was wondering what people think about these different grips.

I was thinking of building one with similar dimensions and geometry as the H&R Ultra Varmint synthetic stock or possibly closer to the Laminate thumbhole.

Anyone shot either or both of these rifles and have an opinion? My concern with the synthetic is that the grip is so low that it would feel like you are reaching for the trigger. Anyone find this?

There are the two I am looking at for angles.

cheers

The thumbhole is more comfortable for me........but I'm old and decrepid.

That's not really a question any of us can answer for you.  Personally I like the Choate stock, but I have large ape-like hands.  Other people just like the wood stock on a gun.  It's all a matter of preference.  My advice would be to handle one of each, then make your decision.

I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

I prefer the look and feel of the thumb hole. But the function of the choate is a better stock. The primary use of my handis is hunting. Because of the hammer. Thumb-holes are way slow and awkward to manipulate. Just a thought...

I am looking for the best of both worlds. Functional and wood! I know what longshot means about the thumbhole being a little slower, the first stock I built, is a thumbhole and it's take a second or so to get the hammer cocked but the yotes seemed to comply and give me time to shoot em anyhow.

Initially, I wanted to build a stock that was similar to the choate but out of wood  and not be a skeleton. the grip would have been in the exact same spot though. Since I don't have access to one and my local shop doesn't have on in their store, i was trying to find out if the grip was comfy in most shooting position.

I have a perfectly functioning homemade stock and yet I want to build another one. Is this some kind of "handi addiction" I have?

For those that have not seen my first stock, here it is.

I have also toyed with this idea for my UV .223.

I have found the survivor stock paired with the choate varmint forend to be quite a comfortable and functional combination.
It's all a hot mess...........

If this is a well made stock, (not the advanced tech/shot-force crap) it will be a very nice ergonomic set up.!!

CW, the plan would be to make the stock out of laminated wood and possibly cover it with Camoclad or get it dipped. My crossbow has a very similar grip and it is very comfy.

The only other thing I have considered is a McMillan or Thompson replica. That would allow easy access to the hammer. The only problem is the bolt is in a bit of a crappy place to do that stock.
