Red Dot Scope for T/C
« on: April 21, 2009, 02:09:51 AM »
I was wondering if anyone uses red dots on their contenders?, If so what makes and models are best as they come in a range of prices and models. Also, what ranges are they good for, just up close or out there a ways.

I'm not up on the new models, prices, etc, but I've used an old Tasco ProPoint on several different barrels with good results.  I've had it on .41 mag, .357 max, and .45 Colt that I can remember.  All 10" barrels.  With the variable intensity and(I think) 1 MOA dot, I'm comfortable to at least 100yd maybe a little more for deer size targets.  Its especially useful during low light conditions as long as you can adjust the intensity...ie...the setting necessary to see the dot at midday is blinding in low light conditions.
GOOD SHOOOTIN',  ;)Walt

aimpoint compC3 2 MOA. Have one on my 44 mag Encore. I like the 2 Moa dot for more precise accuracy. Helps me shoot those turkey heads out to 30 yards! ;D

Ultradot MatchDot (variable dots of 2, 4, 6, and 8 MOA) on both my 10" .22 and 10" .223.

I like the 2MOA dot, but I find that I'm using the 4MOA dot and larger more often than I thought I would.
What I do is to pick a dot size that fills in an inner circle of the target (depending on distance) and have it sit perfectly centered in that circle.
While you don't actually see the bullseye that way, it's really a very accurate way to get your aim dead-center on target.

Like a lot of people, I always thought that the smallest dot size was best, but I'm quickly rethinking that theory.

As far as the Matchdot goes, I've personally found that it's a great scope that is built better than it's under $200 cost would suggest.
I have an AimPoint CompM3 on one of my AR-15's, but am thinking of spending a bit less and putting an Ultradot on my other AR-15.

I have a Bushnell Holosight on the .308 in my picture and it is deadly out to 150-200 yards off of a rest.
I generally shoot at 50-100 yards when deer hunting and just shooting for fun.
The Holosight has super fast target sighting and is a breeze to sight in.
I love mine.

Do you guys find it easier to use than a standard scope? Thanks for the input.

I find the Red Dot Holosight very easy to use.
One advantage is the scope angle and sight picture - what I mean by that is,
If I can see the dot anywhere in my viewing window, I am going to hit wherever that dot is.
You don't have to center the dot relative to anything in the scope, just look , put the dot on what you want to shoot and shoot.
No specific distance from your eye  and  no perfect straight line- of - sight to be able to see the target.

Again, I love mine.

Another vote here for the Ultra Dot.  They also have a lifetime warranty. For anything inside 75 yards I find it much easier to use than a pistol scope.

Another thing to consider about a Red Dot scope is if you want one with adjustable light intensity. I have tried a couple of models ,that were smaller and lighter than an Aimpoint, but had non adjustable dot intensity settings and did not perform well for me in the field. The non adjust models dot became very fuzzy like a starburst in certain light conditions making it difficult to get a clean shot on an animal out at longer distances. Just something to consider.
