Mossberg 835 and slugs

A neighbor bought a Mossberg 835 3.5" 12 ga, and on the barrel it says "not for use with slugs".  What gives???   Why can't he shoot slugs??   It has a Modified tube in it.

  Cowboy, I have one of these also. Called Mossburg. They said slugs will NOT hurt the barrel of this model, but it is really 11 ga. in size. This was to accomdate the heavy shot charge. The slug wouldn't hurt the gun, but it would rattle down the bore with no accuracy.

+ 1 on the no accuracy, I have one and tried it on bags with 3" slugs and no sissy pad. WOW what a beatin and could'nt keep them in the zip code let alone on paper. Figured I didn't need venison that bad. My advice and it's worth exactly what you pay for it, is to pony up the cash and get a slug barrel.

I bought a 835 the first yr they came out also bought the cantalever rifled slug bbl to go with it tried over $100 worth of slugs out of it and could not put 3 slugs on a paper plate at 50 yrds ended up trying cheap 2 3/4" rem sluggers and rotwiellers and was able to hit plate very consistant never tried the 3 1/2" slugs in it though. I killed deer with it several yrs but finally sold the rifled bbl when the opertunity knocked. and went to the H&R slug guns. If I did it again with what I now know I would look at anything else and not even try the slugs in the 835.Just way to long of a chamber to shoot slugs out of. Kurt

If it's the "bird barrel" with choke tubes it's backbored and Mossberg tells you not to shoot slugs from a backbored barrel. It's supposed to pattern shot better, Coyote Hunter is right, it probably won't group very well.
