45/70 Range Report
« on: April 16, 2009, 03:17:10 AM »
My oldest is home from Iraq. His friend from a previous carrier cruise came down from Arkansas and went shooting with us. I let them shoot the USH and a couple other weapons. (Nothing says welcome home like shooting a bunch of weapons)
Then I set up the 45/70. I use poster paper for targets. At 100 yards, they were both shooting about 2" high and to the right. They were trying to hit a 1" square bar code sticker on the target paper. They told me the scope was off. I shot the 45/70 and put a round thru the middle of the sticker. I told them "It ain't the scope".

I got sxxt lucky. I probably could not make that shot on demand again if I tried.
They don't know that though.................. It is good to be Dad.

My son did several cruises to Iraq on the USS Carl Vinson.  I'm proud of what they're doing there and Afgahanistan.  I wish they'd let old farts go back with them and help, but my cruise days are over. :'(   The Vinson's was the first Carrier Group in the Gulf after 9-11.

I think the boys may have been pulling them a little, or perhaps dad's older eyes may be the culprit.....It's set up for you, not those youngsters!::)

Great shooting.  Ya gotta love that .45-70.  She's my baby ;)

Gotta love showing off  ( you know , when it works  ::) ) for the younsters..

My sis-in-law is on the USS Port Royal ATM and was one of the vessels in the group that were threatened a while back by ( dont recall the country) someones armed speed boats while heading on to Iraq ..

But nah you dont want to be back on them boats ... Me and the Old Man were taking on the phone and looking at the Atlantic Arms website .. Showing him the PPSH 41 , Of course i  was like "yeah Pop you can get me that for my B-day" And to that his response was to look down five ads or so , and said that i'll get you that PPSH if you get me that .. Well "THAT"
was a M2 ( ma duece) 50 cal .... And to that i laughed and jested .. Even pointed out that his old butt couldnt tote that beast around .. He made sure to remind me back in his hay day he lugged many a M2 around the USS Enterprise ( aircraft carrier) ... I had to remind him that was about 40 years ago too :P

The idea of it is always more appealing  ::) then the "Oh damn i forgot about that" factor lol

Well, Default, we always keep trying to do the things we used to do.  When I was 26 and in the Navy, I could shoot the head off a swimming cottonmouth at 40 yards with a 1911 .45.  I'm still trying stuff like that, but not so good at it any more.  My heart and soul is with our guys over there, and I do wish I could be there to help.........the least I could do is absorb lead :'(....maybe spare a youngster.

Sorry Tim, I'm off the thread.  I'll shut my old fart trap now.
