Revolvers for cas
« on: April 16, 2009, 03:11:29 AM »
Wondering is all cas with single action revolvers or is there a discipine for double action revolvers also?

I watched a video on cas. It appeared the shooter was maybe holding back the trigger on his
single action revolver continously and pulling back the hammer and letting it go when it was time to
shoot. Is this possible with a single action revolver ?

I used to wonder if "fanning" is a good for very accurate shooting, or if it was an "old west" tale. Looks like it works for the CAS competitors.

Yup! NCOWS allows DA revolvers from the time period...pre 1899.

That's called "slip hammering", and some folks do it well. We shot a video of a top shooter a couple of years ago,and we thought he was slip hammering. When we slowed the video down, he wasn't; he was pulling the trigger each time, just doing it really fast!

Fanning is usually very inaccurate, and very hard in the pistol (not to mention your hand). Fanning the gun is illegal in SASS and NCOWS, because of the lack of control you actually have over the gun when you fan.

Edit: Although fanning is illegal, slip-hammering is perfectly legal.

Thanks Lazarus, I was probably using an outdated term and am thankful for the update. I had always had my doubts as to ANYONE'S accuracy while "fanning".

I am still learning the game so I spent my time at the range yesterday learning how to cock with my left thumb while the pistol is in my right hand. The effect on speed is amazing.  I suspect Lazarus is right.  You really don't need to "slip hammer" if you want to be fast.  Those top shooters really are pulling the trigger every time.  You just need to slow the film down to see it.  Pulling the trigger gives far greater control than slip hammering and for the top shooters it doesn't save that much time.

Fanning on the other hand is insane.  It was invented for the movies.  Remember nothing is more useless than a bullet that is past the target, especially if the target is shooting back.

  Interesting . Slip hammering.

Leads to my next two questions.

Is it hard on the guns ???

Is it safe ?  Is the cartridge always in perfect alienment with  the forceing cone / barrel when
the hammer hits the fireing pin while slip hammering ?

In my opinion it is no harder on the pistol than just shooting. If you cock the firearm completely, the bolt will be engaged and everything will be in alignment. As a side note I find my accuracy is better when slip hammering as your trigger finger cannot jerk the gun

Can't speak for the accuracy portion; I shoot Duelist!

I could imagine it being a pretty accurate way to shoot.  Or fast .
I imagine  there are a few who can combine both.

 Thanks for the input.
