Wondering about a 25-20 hunting barrel. I believe they made them. Any body got experience with a 25-20?

I currently have two, a Marlin M1894 and a BF handgun.   I have shot lots of small game with both firearms, edible and varmint.  The Speer 75-grain FN is a great hunting bullet with its wide flat nose - it kills well even at low velocities.  I'm talking about grouse, rabbits and the like, not larger aminals.  I did kill coyote and fox with the same bullet at max velocities, it worked okay.  The Hornady 75 V-Max will expand some out of the handgun and flys flatter at longer ranges.  This is a small cartridge afterall, not suitable for anything larger than javelina, if that.

I'm trying to decide which is better for Turkey out of a contender, Hornet or 25-20. Some say the Hornet is light.

Whomever "some" is, they must have some mighty tough turkeys.  I've shot turkeys with .22Mag, .22Hor, .218Bee AND .256WinMag(using 25-20 bullets) and I didn't find any of them to be "not enough gun".  ;) :D ;).  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt
BTW Not trying to down the 25-20 idea in any way.

I think everyone has an opinion. I haven't tried a Hornet on turkeys; but, I have been discussing this with a few friends lately. That said, I have also used a .22 Mag and imo it's light. Looking for something that minimizes damage and isn't light. I don't like tracking injured turkeys, they'll walk and walk and.........

Having never hunted turkeys (or had much desire to), maybe I'm missing something, but can't you just shoot 'em in the head, and if you do, does it matter what you shoot them with?  I mean, I know their head is kinda small, but if you can call them into shotgun range, a headshot with a rifle should be reasonable, I would think.

Good luck with the following:
1. You have to get one in range.
2. They'll be moving.
3. The head moves too.
4. You can't let them see you.
5. You can't let them see you move.
6. With a rifle shot at 50+ yards, good luck finding a rest while dealing with 1-5, above.
7. I could go on; but, I think I made my point.

OK, so what you're saying, if I understand you, chucky, is "Yes, a headshot will kill it, but the odds of making said head shot are slim enough that you don't count on it; therefore, having enough gun to take a body shot in the vitals is much preferred over having a gun that absolutely requires a head shot to be reliable."  Right?

Like I said, I know nothing about hunting turkeys.  I just know turkeys is tasty.  :)

When a turkey is standing perfectly still his head is in almost constant motion.
