Handi Newbie brought one home--Questions

If you remember I was trying to decide about the .270 Ultra. Well I brought it home last night. I forgot what it looked like. It actually is the camo lam stock with blued comp barrel. I knew the stock had a few nicks, but not too bad. Made in 1997 per the serial number/letter noted on this site
I apparently didn't pay attention on this site or didn't pay attention when I bought it but it has a little movement in the pivot. Engagement looks good/even, locks up, but it's loose.
I have seen the "shimming" thread here and ruined a perfectly good pop can, but sure tightened her up with no wobble. Couldn't find a feeler guage I know is around somewhere, so I picked one up today. Only one question, Is it common for the shim to be fairly small, say 1/4" and fit only in the "valley"?

Remember, a shim fills from both sides, so it will shim the barrel to the rear by the thickness of the shim, but it makes the hinge narrower by twice the thickness of the shim because there are tow thicknesses, one on each side of the pin.  You may need to just cover 2/3rds of the hinge area to get a proper lockup.  Larry

I understand what you're saying, but I was surprised that the shim only needs to be 1/4" wide and really only covers maybe 1/3 of the inside radius of the hinge and it locks up good. I realize there is no hard and fast rule on this because every one is different, I just thought it would take more as I continued to trim the shim back. Maybe it took so little because this was the original barrel for this receiver, but was just showing wear from use?

I'm sure glass is pretty strong, but it's too thick, plus there's half a bottle left and I wanted to be coherent... ::)

When I think of all the work I did to enlighten the Handi Holic world concerning the merits of each brand of shim stock...  and for all those nights of drinkin and measuring... drinkin and measureing, to be cheapened in such a way...  :(  well, it's just more then a man can bear...  :'(

Sorry to disappoint, but the gout I would have to deal with for the next week isn't worth it, I'll stick with the corn 'licker...
I'm just hoping this gun shoots and I didn't take a royal hosing...I should warn my wife there's a new mistress in the house though, because I can't quit handling the thing, love the balance...and I saw a little 22 mag varmint/new in the gun shop...I could have a regular brothel if this keeps up
