7mm-08 powder choice
« on: April 13, 2009, 02:59:21 PM »
I just bought a 10" 7mm-08 barrel and tried a few loads, I don't think the powder I started with is a great choice, H4350. I loaded some Hornady 120 sp with 48 gns. and some Hornady 139 gns interbond with 48 grns also, 2.800 length and they shot okay 120 gns went 2300 fps where the 139 grn went 2370 fps. I think the powder was to slow for this short of barrel, a large muzzle blast and kicked pretty good. Any suggestion, I 've only had pistol barrels up until now. Thanks, Rick

I use Varget with 139 gr. Hornady Interlocks which gives me 1 to 1.5 inch 100 yard 3 shot groups with a scoped Encore handgun.

What shoots well in a rifle is also likely to shoot well in a pistol; you don't have to go to a faster powder.

That's a lot of slow powder to burn in a 10 " BBL. thus the fireball .When I had an XP in7 x 308 [pre 7-08 days] I used 4198 . I'ld check the manuals for 3031, 4895, and lastly 4064 loads, and also check the 7 x 57 for loads

Wayne:
I presume you don't mean that 7mm-08 and 7x57 loads are interchangable, someone reading your post could interpret it that way.
