« on: April 11, 2009, 03:27:13 PM »
I have got a 223 handi with a 1:12 twist barrel on it.I've had this for sometime now and have yet to shoot it.What would you guys recommend for bullet weight in this?Anybody have any suggestions for a good load to start with?I will be hand loading for this rifle because I have got plenty of components for the 223.

I say you can try any bullet weight up to 60 grains and expect it to stabilize.  Barrels can be picky though so you will have to do some experimenting.  I started with 26.0 grains od AA2520 under a 60 gr. Hornady hollow point which is a pretty long bullet.  I haven't scoped the rifle yet but am getting groups under 1 1/2 inches (at 50 yards) using iron sights and my not so good 52 year old eyes.

My all time best load for the 223 is a Remington SR match primer, (Near max load of) H322 powder and a Sierra 53gr match bullet.

This load has shot great from a number of my rifles, I'm sure it will in yours too.

I was shooting alot of 1/2" groups with a 50gr Sierra Blitz bullet and H322 powder.  I dont remember the weight of the powder.
It's all a hot mess...........
