I really enjoy reading all of what you Guys do with these Rifles ,After reading My $65 DIY .357 Mag Handi and looking at the links to the 357 & 44 barrels
Its time to ASK

What is A Stub
Quote
a sawed Off Shotgun  :o :o :o

I have a 12 and 20 that are begging me to let them out.
Do I just Cut and Fit ?

What about my Frames ??
Can I  do either of these rounds on Frames that are not for High Pressure rounds
NO I'm not a Gambler just antsy to make something of these shotguns
I would love a 44 mag Pig sticker
I'll need to Double Check my Frames before starting(need some help)
Buy a Barrel (I have those Links)
and ......................... ?
So do you guys want to walk me through a Project ?.?.?.?

Thanks

Basically "STUBBING or STUB BARREL" is cutting off the chamber section including the lug, 3-5" total from chamber face, then boring and threading the section(several ways and methods), threading another rifle barrel, screwing it in the stub section, then chambering and headspacing...(again several methods and ways to accomplish this feat).

It is not really for the DIY'er...it requires a lathe and a fair amount of knowledge of gunsmithing...while there are some chamberings that can be done by hand reaming without using a lathe, it still requires a bit of thinking and understanding several aspects of 'smithing.

I would suggest reading a few books on gunsmithing to get the basics down before you try a project...and read all the sticky's...most of what you asked is already covered...

Luck on your projects.

Here is where I  started ordered a barrel and 357 ejector this morning.

Just remember, if you, at any time in the project, have a shotgun barrel that is shorter than 18 inches that can chamber a round, you have a sawed off shotgun.  If you have a stub that does not have a barrel permanently attach, (welded) that could chamber a round if you removed the rifle barrel then you also have a sawed off shotgun.  Whatever process you use to produce the stub and resulting barrel make sure you never have an operable shotgun barrel that is shorter than the magic 18 inches.  When I do my projects I always do all the machine work like boring and threading on the breach end before I cut it from the barrel.  If you were to remove the rifle barrels from any project I have done the stub cannot be used to chamber or fire a round.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

Billy_56...
Same Plan here but in 44 or if it looks like I can do this with what tools I have (or have access too) and its more my Labor than $$$$
I'll do one of EACH  ;D
.

Do you think that if I use the Barrel in the link. I would have to do much more than thread Both barrels and Flush the New with the Stub ?
I won't even start (yet) on the extractor but I'm wanting to do it almost twined to maglvr44's $65 DIY Stub Project
I have access to the Tap and Die (I think) I don't know the OD on the new 44 Yet
I understand I can't just Tap and screw it will take time and thought aligning and such ............
PC is acting up  I'll post more later

Yeah but that takes all the fun and joy   out of it.

If it were me I would try to do both the 44 and 357 if time and funds would allow.

I just read this from the other Post Made by Zoner and it  pretty much puts the brakes on in making a 44 so I guess I will do the 357  ;D
By ZONER:
Quote
i don't think that 44 barrel will work for this project...the barrel maglvr used was .795 diameter at the breech..he only needed to take  about .020 off it to make it fit in the chamber of the 12 barrel...so little that he was able to do it with a belt sander and keep the bore centered....that 44 barrel says it is 1 3/16 "diameter at the breech so without a lathe I doubt it is possible to remove that much metal and still keep the bore centered in what you have left

Every body has thier own wants and needs but for me it makes no sense to do a stub in a caliber that has a factory bbl available unless you were wanting a differant twist or a 26 or 28" bbl. Kurt

I want to do it and just because is the only reason I can come up with.  I think if you like to make things, do it, and don't worry about why.  Self satisfaction of a project completed and working is a very good thing.

I too am interested in a barrel stub and am looking at all my options. It's fun to tinker and I think thats one reason we all love Handi's... with so many parts and stocks that interchange, and barrels that can be easily fitted, they are addictive.
Not to be a negitive nancy or to rain on anyones parade..... just be careful boys.
A rifle that is not manufactured by qualified gunsmiths and are "home made" throws caution to the wind it's not something to just slap together. Even with low pressure cals.
I wouldn't want to see anyone get hurt just to save a few bucks :-\

Try buying a factory barrel for under $27 ;)

i  do  understand the satisfaction of  doing it  yourself
but  for  that effort  i would  have to make  it MORE  unique

the rifle that  is  the suject  of this  thred   is  far  beyond  my  capabiliteis
and  something  to be  proud of....so  don't  think that  i am  knocking  it

but  for that  time  and  effort......tremendous  in  my  inexperienced  veiw
think  of all the bullets  you could  reload ;).....bullets  just like  you can  buy ???
