Call GLOCK and ask them. Their Technical Support is very helpful.  Give them the serial number and they'll tell you if it needs the 'upgrades'.

If the internal parts all black in color then yes, you need the factory up-date kit. Glock will install the parts free of charge. If you can find a local GSSF match or a local dealer that has a factory rep stopping for a day they will install the kit also.

I have an older preban model 17 glock .What do you mean mandatory upgrades ? Is there something wrong with the gun ?

Not likely, but they did have some tolorance issues and the upgrade parts fixed the problem in the few guns that were having problems so rather then wait to see if more were going to have problems Glock just updated the internals of all the early G17. Cost is free if you need it so I would just call and ask then if need be, have it done.

Glock has "Upgrades" where other companies might have "Recalls". It's much better for marketing.

I have a very early Glock 19 with no mods. There was some bad press
about Glocks in the beginning that I feel were completely unfounded.
Glock made some minor mods. to shut up some folks I think.
These handguns passed some very stringent military testing in several
countries before the supposed mods. ever came in to question at all.
I think the original models were fine but glock had to do something
to quiet the nay sayers. to me the mods. just looked like some type
of coating.

Had a first gen mdl 17. Never any problems with it. It's been a long time ago, but don't recall any internal differences other than the one pin in the locking block.

I had my fixed at the GSSF match. They replace just about everything. You will leave with your bbl but all other parts will be changed. When they did mine the main block pin camr out in 3 peices. It was broke and still working fine. J.Michael

Glock had a trigger upgrade in 1992 to eliminate the possibility of slam-fire. Parts replaced included the following: firing pin, firing pin safety, firing pin safety spring, extractor, spring-loaded bearing, and upper trigger bar. This was for model 17s with serial number prefixes AA through XG inclusive. Yours would not need the trigger upgrade...
