454 Casull

Anyone here consider the 454 a big bore in a rifle?  I got 2 of em and I think they qualify.  Rate em up there with 444 marlin and the 45-70.  DP

Ok I dont have one right this minute but I want one, the problem is that I am on a self-imposed buying ban!

But since you got two UH er Hmmm .........you could lend me one!   ;D

But I do consider a 454 Casull a big bore. Considering the bullet and Energy

Don'T have any rifle ballistics this pistol stuff makes it a potent pill
 300 gr xtp HP@100 yards in a 7/1/2 inch pistol barrel 1348/1210

I consider a Puma M92 rifle chambered in 454 Casull a 45-70 light great rifle/cartridge combo and I really enjoy mine but it will never come close to the performance of a 45-70... :D

Basically from the 20" barreled M92 I shoot 405gr Beartooth WLNGC's @ 1600fps compare this to 525gr Beartooth Piledriver's (WLNGC's) in my 18.5" barreled Marlin 1895GS @ the same 1600fps velocity or 550gr Jae-Bok Joung Crater's @ 1580fps.

Also a 20" barreled M92 is almost the exact same length as my Marlin guide gun here is a pic of both of them.

One thing that I really like about the 454 though is I can fit 9 405gr rounds into the mag tube compared to only 4 in the 45-70 tube.

I push 360gr WLNGC's from the 454 out at 1860fps... :D

360gr at 1860fps is firmly in 45-70 territory and in a lighter package.  Another plus on the 454 is no case lube to clean off.  That is a the job I don't like when I'm reloading.  Yes, I like my 45-70, but am really impressed with the 454 and even the old 45 colt loaded hot for the 92 Puma and my Redhawk.  I really like the Lams on your 454, where did ya find those?  DP

I shoot 405gr jacketed or 430gr cast easily @ 1950fps from my 18.5" Marlin 1895GS which is why I call a 454 Casull a 45-70 light.

I just can't compare the 2 cartridges when it comes to top performance loads being used in the 45-70.

If it was a 16" barrel I would say it was a lighter package but both rifles are almost the same length and weight.

Now don't get me wrong I obviously like my Puma M92 454 a lot but when going into the thick bush after a grizzly I take the Marlin and leave the Puma in the truck/camp.

I bought the laminate stocks from GunStocksInc the butt stock is a basic Win 1894 but due to not having any wood working tools I asked to have the fore end mag tube hole machined out to accept the far larger mag tube of the M92 454 they said they would do it for me for another $80 - $100 can't remember for sure.

When I recieved the stocks the fore end mag tube hole was so unfinished that I had to go out buy a drill motor and some doweling cut it to 12" - 14" lengths and then cut a slot into one end and spin emery paper for hours to get the far larger M92 mag tube to fit.

The wood around the very front of the fore end is so thin that there is absolutely no strength left and it has started to crack now...  >:(

I made the stocks work but I feel that I was cheated out of a fair bit of money if I were to do it again I would purchase a stock fore end and spin it out and save the $80 - $100.

Now don't get me wrong they were excellent people to deal with I just feel that for the extra money I should have recieved what I paid for instead of being taken advantage of.

The Casull can hang with the low end of 45-70 loads (trapdoor) but when you get into lever gun and Ruger #1 loads for the 45-70 the Casull starts to fall behind fast....my hot loads for the 45-70 are more than the Casull can take.

No arguement on that, and I would also prefer the 45-70 against a grizz.  However, I don't feel undergunned toting the 454 around here in Montana.  The penetration and performance I have gotten in game has given me confidence in the round.  DP

Course, I shoot a single shot.  Some of my rounds wouldn't cycle in most levers because the COL is too long. But for versatility I would still pick the 45-70.
