Rifle or Handgun
« on: April 07, 2009, 02:34:46 AM »
I picked up my new (to me) Contender frame from my FFL yesterday.
When he called it in and answered the ?  of handgun or rifle he said frame only.
The Gal on the other end was a little confused and said it had to be one or the other so he said handgun which I'm glad he did.

My question is that the seller had indicated to me it sold as a rifle new so legally
I may not put a pistol barrel on it.
Since it is now registered to me as a handgun does that truly change its listing  ???

Hope so  ;)
Mike

The way the frame was first assembled into a working firearm would be the proper designation under Federal law.

As for the legalities of putting a handgun barrel and grips on your frame; I'm not even going to go into that since it's been hashed out so many times on this forum and others.

:( That was not the answer I was looking for :-\
Thanks for the input can somebody prove him wrong ???

That is not meant in a personal way.
It sounded cold when I looked back so:
I am going to call you Bill and this should sound better.

Bill, I know you have a ton of experience with TC and you may be 100% right
but it seems to me that maybe the designation could be changed.
Maybe as simple as what I just did or maybe it would have to go thru TC??

Thanks
Mike

"The way the frame was first assembled into a working firearm would be the proper designation under Federal law."

This quote brings another question to mind ???
I have never bought a Contender new but I would guess that you buy a frame,
and then you pick a barrel you want to go with it.
So if you pick a hand gun barrel it would be registered as such
but if you got a rifle barrel then it would be registered as such

A little extra thrown in ???, What if you bought it as a muzzle loader :-\

I bought a frame with out a barrel and am registering as new to me so WHY
would I not be able to register as a handgun?
It does not have a barrel or Caliber even?

I am not questioning your response but think MAYBE you  might be able to change it ???

Who cares, I doubt it will ever come into question in the field. I have several different barrels in several different calibers in several different lengths both pistol and rifle. I also have five contender frames and four Encore frames and about 15 or so different stock combos once again both pistol and rifle. I switch them all around from one to another all the time so I can't hardly remember how they were configured when I bought them. On top of that most were bought used so how would I even know as a matter of fact I have never asked that question when I made a purchase. Surely I can't be the only one who does this. Has anyone ever got into hot water with this? Sorry to hijack the topic kind of but I have always wondered if this is important at all.

how   it was originally manufactured  is what matters
and  it con not be reassigned  with out  the $200  and  ATF  form  1  or 4.. i forget

technically they can  stick  you big  time if they  want
don't  use pistol barrel  and rifle stoch..you will be asking for it
be  careful  and play dumb

or  just  pass on the gun  and buy  a pistol

technically  you might be in  violation  if  you convert it to a rifle and  back....but not sure
just  hard to prove

call  the ATF   let us know what they say

I by no means was trying to reopen the barrel switching topic.
Just questioning if I did or could change the designation.

I have not read the 15" thread in a while
I will go take a look at it again.

Thanks
Mike
