Savage 110 or 111. What's the difference?

I'm starting to get into Savage arms and after a bit of research am trying to decide between the 110 combo with a Simmons 8 point scope at wal-mart for $377.00.  Their is a Savage 111 FXP3 combo with a Simmons blazer scope at Sports authority.  Both are .270s.  Is it better to spend the extra money on the 111 or get the 110 and save some money?  Your input is appreciated.

Both have the same receiver and barrel. I think the 110 probably has a wooden stock? I'd rather have the wood. Either scope is about as good as the other, which isn't all that good. In this case, I'd go for the cheaper one if it has the AccuTriger like the more expensive one. Just my opinion of course.

I think Skunk is right; IIRC the 110 is a hardwood stock and the 111 is a flexy-flier synthetic.  I'd personally choose the hardwood stock since the Savage package-gun synthetics are very floppy.

No gentlemen, the 110 is a synthetic stock.  The trigger was covered by a lock, so i can't say if it was an accu-trigger or not.  Thanx for the info.

How peculiar.  Perhaps a Wal-Mart-only special run?  The "10" (whether 110 or just 10 for long vs. short action) has always meant wood in the past.  "10" means wood, "11" means blue and synthetic, "12" means laminate, "16" means stainless and synthetic... you get the idea; the numbers are the code for what they are (the letters help code further).  Savage's current product line at their website and printed catalog both still verify this.

DSG had the same thing a couple of months ago. I bought the 111 in 30-06 without any regrets. I don't own a lot of bolt actions but this one is a tack driver after I got rid of the cheap scope. I find Savage's model designation to be very confusing. My buddy has a 110 in .270 and it's looks exactly like my 111, so who knows.

I saw the 110 on the barrel and the clerk read it out loud to me.  So it was a 110 in synthetic stock.  I appreciate the designations though.  Thanx gentlemen.

Without all the letters in the designation, you don't know anything about the rifle by just knowing that it is a 110 or 111.  I have a wood stocked 111.  About the only thing that holds true is that the 12s are heavy barreled.  Can't make a determination about the stock or finish.

I'd spend a little extra and get a real scope.  99% of the time Savages are real shooters.  I'd be a shame for the glass to be the limiting factor.

You are correct about the magazines. the 110 is a blind magazine where the 111 is a removable magazine. As far as the clicks go on the scope I have a 500.00 Leupold and it works the same way a friction type adjustment. The scopes they come with are not very good but do work atleast for awhile.

I was just about to comment on this and say the difference is with the magazines, not the stocks. I see I was beat to it though.

Not all 111s have removable magazines.  Only some.  There are current 11/111 models with blind mags, hinged floorplates and detachable magazines.  Without the letters, you don't know which it is.  In the package models, the FXP is a bling mag and the FCXP is the box mag.

The number designations are as follows:

12/112 or 10/110 - Varmint/Target series...only drilled and tapped for scope mounts, no open sights, 24" or 26" barrel, blued or stainless depending on specific variation

11/111 - Hunter series...open sights & drilled and tapped for scope mounts, 22" or 24" barrel, blued only

110/111xxXP3 - Package series...no sights, comes with 3-9x32 scope mounted, 22" or 24" barrel, blued only, wood stock/leather sling installed or synthetic stock/nylon sling installed

16/116 - Weather Warrior series...no sights, only drilled and tapped for scope mounts, 22", 24" or 26" barrel, stainless steel only

The letter codes are what determines the "specific's" of the rifle...here is the list:

so...the 12FV is a short action model with a varmint/HB and a synthetic stock!

What is a used 110 GXP, if I remember the letters correctly, missing the scope worth, has nice wood, bolt is jeweled and leather sling is in like new shape. It is a 30-06 caloiber and still has the mounts, and is nice shape considering it's used and has seen woods duty. My guess is it was used a couple of deer seasons and traded to the store. He has $385 on the rifle so he has probably $200 to $275 in the rifle. I am not sure but new at Wally World these are only about $450 new are they not?

I can tell you this about the Savage package rifles, take the rings and scope off the new rifle and sell it, give it away, or throw it in a lake or river.  Then put a decent scope and rings on it and you will have a shooter.  The entry level scopes that come on them are a joke and are put on their rifles for the un-inititiated public to think they are set-up and ready to go hunting.  I think the 110 has a plain barrel and the 111 has barrel mounted adjustable iron sights from the factory, but wouldn't bet the farm on it.

 have a 111 in 7mm mag with syn stock, and no sights. doesnt have any letter code.

im looking for a stiffer stock, the syn stock flexes too much with the 7mm, especialy shooting from a bipod.
