I would start with a web visit to some BC game regulations department. If you live in Canada some of the process may be easier on you. Canadian bear hunts seem to be fairly reasonable in price. If it's your 1st time & you want a good chance of success maybe try to hook up with a reputable outfitter.

Supposed to have huge bears... If I'm not mistaken Jim Shockey runs his operation there...

Do you got a blood relative there? Then no problems, they can get a  licenseto act as your Guide otherwise hunting on Vancouver Island as a non-resident has the same laws as the rest of B.C. Yes, they got big bears and lots of them. Be prepared to get wet.

BC has 7 sub-species of black bears, Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands have the 2 largest/biggest sub-species with the Charlotte bears supposedly being the biggest bears.

Yes Shockey is on Van Is.

I thought you had to have a guide there as well.  Let us know when you find out the facts.  I'd hunt to hunt that island from what I've seen on TV.

As a possibly less expensive and certainly less bureaucratic alternative you might consider catching the ferry to SE Alaska.  You can take a BC ferry to Prince Rupert and then take an AK ferry to say Prince of Wales Island, or you can take the AK ferry from Bellingham, WA.  I suppose you could also drive to Prince Rupert or to one of the AK ports served by the AK Marine Highway.  No guide is required in AK for black bears.  Prince of Wales Island has lots of bears and lots of old logging roads, at least on the north end.  No gun registration is required (the reason I no longer go to Canada to shoot trap) in Alaska.  The largest black bears I have ever seen are on Prince of Wales Island as there are no brown bears to eat them and the habitat is ideal.  Spring bear hunting coincides with king salmon fishing, and while POW black bears taste better than any I have had anywhere else, no black bear meat tastes as good as an ocean caught king salmon.  Also, you would want to check on wolf season as anywhere on Prince of Wales Island you can howl at night and receive all kinds of answers from wolves.  You can also shoot seals and sea otters but you need to first convince the feds of some percentage of Indian blood.

You can pitch your tent on the AK ferry, and they have showers.  Therefore you need not buy a ferry cabin.  Selection of ammo in stores is not as good now as it was say one year ago.  I have sometimes used a Lee hand press to reload ammo on the AK ferries.

 Hello to all.

I live on Vancouver Island. We have lots of bears. And some are big.
Some days u can see 25 + bears just driving the roads.
If u have a blood relative, they can get a liescne to guide you. If not
you need a guide. There are lots of good guides on the Island.
You "DON'T" need  JIM SHOCKY  to guide you. You can hunt the same areas he hunts ,
He doesn't own the land.
But bring your rain gear. The Island has been known to get lots of rain

I didn't check them out, but I have them on a list I keep for different dream hunts.  I've been taking a yearly week long hunting trip every year for the last 5 years, but this year it's just not going to happen.  I keep collecting information though for when/if it does.
