Help with youth turkey gun
« on: April 06, 2009, 12:24:33 PM »
I'm looking for the lightest recoiling 20ga., the best recoil pads, what loads to use, etc. out there for my 9 year old. She has a Handi-Rifle in .223 and I was thinking of opting to have a 20ga. barrel fitted, but my past experience with these single shots and recoil has not been good. Any suggestions appreciated.

We tried the 20ga handi and it was just too rough...heck, I even hated shooting it  >:(

Eventually I found a used Winchester 1300 with a youth stock that is perfect for my daughter.  She enjoys shooting it and the recoil is pretty minimal.  A semi-auto should be better than a pump, but I didn't want to pay the $$ for it or worry about jamming.  I think a good youth pump would be great (millions of sales can't be wrong)  Look for a youth REM 870 or Winchester or even a Mossberg Bantam.  You won't pay alot and these shotguns have stood the test of time.

As far as loads, we've shot different high-brass loads from her 20ga (#4's and #6's primarily) and she hasn't complained once.

Good luck...and be patient and get something that fits his/her frame and you'll both be happy.

My recomendation is what I shoot. Remington 870 Express Magnum 20 guage Light Wing. 3" #5 Winchester Turkey loads. I have shot it for years and never had a problem. It has SOME kick with the 3" ers but I can shoot it out of my wheelchair with no problem. Very comfortable gun for ladies or youth as well as the disabled. Well balanced and doesn't kick the snot out of ya.
