Tuning a 92
« on: April 06, 2009, 11:50:33 AM »
I recently acquired a sweet little EMF 92 in .357. I looked at a smith's site and it talked about tuning the rifle, including swapping out the magazine follower with a metal one. I'm not unfamiliar with basic gunsmithy ... anybody recommend some steps to tune it up, and where to get parts?

I saw a post on a Rossi/Puma 92, didn't know how different the Brazilians are from the Italian 92s.

This guy does 92 work, and also I think he sells how to books and videos.  He works on EMF's a lot.

He did send me the metal mag follower, and a plug to put in place of that funny little safety on the bolt.
Mine could use some work as well...the extractor on mine has a spring stiff enough to put on a pickup truck.  It messes up my brass a bit.  Someday when funds permit I might just ship my rifle to him, it's cheap to ship a rifle UPS yet.

Never worked on an Eyetalian 92, but I don' recallow as how they could be much different than any of the others, other than a coil type mainspring instead of the flay sprinng on the originals.

The single thing that makes the most difference on the Rossi 92s, insofar as smooting up the action, is the littlest spring in them! No kidding! The ejector spring in most of them is too stout. That's the thing that makes them hard to open and shut the action! Don't seem like that little thing would make that much difference, but it does! There's an outfit out there that makes replacement springs for Rossi's 92, especially for the CAS shooters, but I can't recall who they are at the moment. I just clipped a couple of coils off mine and put it back in...made a HUGE difference! You can lighten the main spring too and it will help some, but don't over do it. After that jist sit in front of the telly and cycle the empty gun a couple of thousand times and PRESTO...instant action job! ;D

Be forwarned, the action on a 92 is easy to take apart and can be a real booger to get back together. Best have someone who has done it a time or three walk you through the process at least oncet!

The link provided by Jimster will put you in touch with the best smith I know of for 92s though. His work is phenomenal!!!!!!!! He'll make your 92 smoother than butter and faster than greased lighting!

Jim Taylor wrote a great piece somewhere online (maybe leverguns.com) on tunning a 92. It certainly smoothed mine up. Try to google it its a great article. Like mentioned give yourself plenty of time once you start it can be frustrating. I'd recomend after breakfast on a day off with no plans. Good luck
