Getting cold feet on a .270 Ultra Comp purchase...convince me

I have a used .270 Ultra Comp on layaway...it's the green laminate/stainless model...a little wear from field use, but not abused. I've never owned a handi of any kind, but I do still have my first shotgun, an H&R 12Ga w/full choke bbl.
I've looked at a lot, but never closed the deal on one. What am I in for?
I know the comp comes off. Do most of you take them off and replace w/thread protector esp. for hunting? I'm down to my last pmt and I'm starting to second guess myself, but that sucker was one of those that speaks to you when you lay eyes on it...

I have a 270 like urs with no comp, shoots inch or slightly under, great rifle for the money..............

Buy it, you'll like it ::).  Shoots good, is reliable, and you only need one shot if you are proficient as a hunter should be.

I have one and it shoots amazing.   Consistent 3/4" to 1" groups with a variety of bullets.  Kicks very little.  I always use hearing protection even when hunting so I leave the muzzle brake on...    It was suppose to be my backup gun this fall on an elk hunt, but I had some last minute issues with my 7 mag and it became my primary gun.  One shot, one dead elk.  I've sold or traded other barrels (regretfully on one...) but this one's staying with me.   Good luck!! - Mike

At least you're starting out smarter on the Ultra Comp than I was. I hunted for years with mine before I found out the danged Comp could be removed (Thanks to GBO & Quickdtoo).
The .270 Ultra Comp was my first Handi and would be hard pressed to let her go.
Heck even if ya end up not liking it, there are folks here that would take her off your hands and give her a good home. ;)

Ya can never have enough guns. That being said if you had only two one a shotgun and one a 270, you can take any game in the lower 48. That is the way i see your "problem".

Thanks guys, I'm going to go ahead on it. I have a Vanguard in .270 and really like the caliber so I guess that's another thing that attracted me to it as a back-up. I also have been hanging around this site just long enough to know that I couldn't just let "anybody" get ahold of it. Hopefully I come to fully appreciate this gun the way some of you do.

Troyboy, I never want to be put in a position to have only a 12Ga and a .270, what fun would that be?... :)

Any problems with the scope mount with the set screw arrangement that rests on the barrel?

The Ultra rail set screw should be .0015" off the barrel, not quite touching, it's only there for support of a big scope if it gets bumped, that's per Gardner H&R techs, it's in the FAQs too.  ;)

And my hat off to you for this. If it doesn't shoot well then many a Handi owner would LOVE to have this barrel

I see you ending up with your .270 Vanguard as your "back-up" and with your fine SS .270 Comp Handi Ultra as your primary rifle....<><....:)

Don't waste your money! If you are having second thoughts it is obvious that gun is not what you want, find something else you would rather own.

Just built one for my wife.  All in all we're very pleased.  Very accurate (1 moa).   The only thing is the compensator doesn't seem to reduce the recoil that much.  Still kicks hard with 130gr loads.
