Just hope you are right, also Texas did not start this, it was a US wide panic. And maybe rightfully so.

BHO started it LONG before 11/4/08

I just read an article that contributes a lot of this to the world-wide need for some metals.  Brass for example is being bought by China for several dollars more per pound than the normal trade rate.  Ammunition from overseas providers is being cut by out government, so we are in a supply and demand situation.

I attended a gun show yesterday in Abilene, Tx, there was very little ammo available, what was there was selling for a premimum price.  The same was true for reloading supplies.  I talked to one ammo dealer that usually makes shows all over the Southwest, he said he can no longer get ammo from several of the major American makers, and said what few primers and powder that was available is being bought up by the makers so they can continue their business.

I agree with several of the above comments, this did not start in Texas in is a nation wide problem.  If you don't believe this just go out and try to find ammo.

I am amazed that some see this as a "fad" or something that is just going pass.
If I stick my head deep enough in the sand, It will go away.
Folks, we are in trouble here and it is kind of like bleeding to death from a
pin prick. A little here A little there until it is too late. I have spent the last three evenings
Reloading for some other folks. Who were these other folks? LOCAL POLICE OFFICERS!
They can't even get ammo! And they are supposed to be there to help us out!
We better be prepared to defend our own families and stuff people, because
with budget cuts and ammo 3 times the price of what it was last year, small agencies
just can't afford it. These folks are my friends and they are now pretty well supplied
for anything they may encounter around here. Point is, when police can't get ammo,
you know things are pretty bad. And I believe we have not seen anything yet!

Reading this thread, do you guys really think this isn't a liberal plot to undermind the ammo business? The frenzy buying(by people who don't normally buy ammo) is only feeding this shortage.

Undermine the ammo business? Their business is booming! there are so many things
feeding this frenzy right now, that it would be hard to single one out as the main cause.

A little forethought and everyone coulda been sitting pretty. I bought whenever I saw a sale, and have enough ammo to last until I can't shoot or hunt. I also have powder, primers, bullets, brass and dies for calibers I primarily use. I still have scaled downed my shooting and have stopped giving away my brass. I aint buying nuthin..

I was at Gander yesterday and they wanted 50 bucks for a box of .45 Colt Cowboy loads  >:( Same price for .44 mags and Specials. I didnt buy any ammo.I can get it for about 30 bucks closer to home. A lot of the ammo had no prices marked,I'm guessing so they can change the prices with whatever the going national rates are.Dont buy from the stores that are gouging prices and this will stop. ::)

I'm shooting my pellet gun...quietly and cheaply in my back yard.  Yes, I have a decent supply of ammo and reloading supplies but I don't want to panic buy at the current prices. Honestly, the ammo suppliers and gun dealers are just feeding the hysteria  and laughing all the way to the bank.  It's win/win for them..charge horrific prices to panicked buyers and blame it on a president who, as yet, has done NOTHING to restrict the sales of guns/ammo and has even said repeatedly that it is not one of his priorities. Hell, the firearms biz is the ONLY segment of the consumer economy doing well.  Why would he want to mess with that?

I'm a lucky guy I guess. My favorite dealer wouldn't even consider price gouging or sending his customers into hysteria or panic mode. Every AR15 that he had in his shop sold for the same price after the panic started that was on the price tag before the panic (I'm trying to say that he didn't raise his prices). The only increase in prices for powder and primers were the increases that he also endured, which were dictated by the manufacturers and distributors. He is pretty much sold out of ammo at this point, but not one box of ammo sold had an increase in price. My gun community is lucky to have a dealer like him. So, when it costs me $25.00-$50.00 more to buy a rifle from him rather than buying it on GunBroker, I have no problem giving the money to him so that he can make his 15%-20%. He deserves it for what he gives back to us.

The ammo shortage is definitely hurting even the LE.  My brother's step son is a deputy and they have reduced their qualifying rounds and are looking at limiting qualification for desk jockeys.  Grant Cunnungham had an article in his blog about the situation and it boils down to the the industry having steady sales since the Clinton era and suddenly there's a rush that manufacturing can't catch up to in a short time.  It's a celebration for gun and ammo dealers as far as short term profit in an ailing economy.

i have a cousin that is pretty darn wealthy.  he has so many rounds back ordered he is averaging about 8K rounds per week as his LARGE catalog of backorders are being filled.  he is insane.  asked him if he had the balls to actually use it should our country passively cont. to go the direction it's going.  he gave me a blank look and said yes very sheepishly.  he will never ever ever use this amount of ammo.  he has upwards of 200K rounds stockpiled over the years.  it is stupid.  i think he's dumb and one of my other buds hasn't re bought his stockpile yet b/c he hasn't used all the crap he stockpiled dreading for Y2K.  i sure don't have my head in the sand but i feel after you have a couple thousand rounds stockpiled you really need guts and the will to act more than more rounds.  i fear we'll have plenty of rounds in the future but a lack of people willing to fight for our country should that time come.

Earlier someone said the current admin. hadn't done anything negative to shooters yet, or something along those lines.   I just noticed that when I looked at bullets on the Cabelas site, that it said something about needing an export license to send bullets out of the USA and an import(*?) license to bring bullets, etc. into the country.  Maybe someone more astute than I can elaborate on this.

I'm still getting emails about HR 45.  I thought this was still in "committee", or it died there.  Anyone know for sure?

I'm not trying to steal the thread.  I think this is germain because lots of people are stockpiling ammo because they don't trust the current admin. including those lame-brain congressmen and woman.

I have stopped shooting.I refuse to make these corporations rich on my hard earned money.
I have been thinking of going into the firearms retail business. These folks don't
have a thing to worry about in this recession. You guys that are buying up a "lifetime" of supplies at
this fleeting frenzy of price gouging will make me a rich man.
Point in case the previous poster said he paid 75 for 1000 primers .a week ago i bought 1000 for 33 bucks ..and i thought that was high. Your getting gouged!! .Don't put up with it!!
In today's economy I have to worry more about layoffs then i do about weekend recreation.
If I lose my job I can't eat primers..(nor can my family)And I refuse to scalp them on gunbroker .
I have enough components to hunt deer and birds and sight in my rifle once a year for quite awhile.
And enough handgun ammo to shoot a few hundred bad guys in self defense should the need arise.
I have enough 17mach2 and 22lr to dispatch 8 or nine hundred varmints around the house.

I mean how much is enough..??

Obamaphobes are killing this sport.

Things are getting incrementally worse.  Give it some time.  I think there will be a serious problem in the future at some point.  How long into the future; who knows.  I don't agree with people who believe conditions will always remain as the status quo.  That mindset isn't realistic.  And remember, it only takes one BIG event to change everything.

I think the madness is slowing down, close to a halt.  The availability of just about all variations of all rifles is almost back to what it was.  I followed "PMC 223" ammo on gunbroker for a long time and it used to sell for around $500 per 1000 at the peak of the madness.  Now those same cases of ammo won't sell for $350 per case of 1000.  Granted, it's taken almost a year, but just be patient, things are moving in the right direction.

Good call, Teddy. We are finally getting ammo, and a decent selection. It is good to see the manufacturers waking up.

LOL, I think the manufacturers are finally getting some sleep.  Most of what I've read they haven't expanded their factories, but were running 3 shifts around the clock to keep production moving.  I just look forward to the day when we're all remembering this panic instead of living in it.

Great Shootall.
way to fuel the frenzy again.
Do you own a gun shop or just have stock in gun and ammo companies?   ;D
As I said earlier I think the people that are/ were worried about what the dolts in Congress and local governments are going to do have hit thier saturation point of what they can hold or spend.  And the guys that thought they would make fast $ on buying cheap and selling high have petered out as guys that spent the $500 plus for a 1,000 rounds of 223 have stopped buying as they are now happy to have thier case of ammo for the what ever happens next senerio.  And the ammo companies are able to make head way with the supply Vs. the instant demand.
On the same note.  I went to the Bass Pro Shop here in N. CA on Sunday and they had.  22LR, 223 hunting ammo, 7.62X39, 00 buck, other buck loads, and some popular handgun loads.  Weeks before there was nothing in 223, 308, 7.62X39, 30-06, 12ga anything, and No rimfire or center fire handgun of any kind.

nope don't own anything in the firearms industry . the same thing went on in WW-2 , Y2K , and now , some will never learn now will they ?

If the industry dosen't play the slow down correctly it could put some out of business . If they saturate the shelves they will be out of business . Don't look forward to over runs just yet.

My uncle works for the Remington ammo plant in AR. He told me they have been humoing it, and even added a 4th shift. He said they have hired so many new people it's not funny, but only a 1/4 of them return to work for a 2nd week.

I used to work in a fab shop and when work picked up we called a temp agency.  It wasn't uncommon to see 5 new faces in the morning, 3 still there by lunch and maybe 1 will stick it out for a week.  There's a lot of people out there who really just don't want to work.

I don't deny these situations exist.  I would expect that the incidence is far less these days than in the last 30 years of the previous century, now that the old time welfare (AFDC) has ended.  I would add that the temps I know of paid their workers a lot less than the permanent workers started at, with many temps starting at min. wage or so.

Of course there are lots more crappy jobs that won't even begin to support a family, even with both husbands & wives working thanks to "Dick" Clinton and NAFTA.   It will be hard to "spend" us out of the hole we've dug for ourselves when much of our shopping happens at "China-Mart", the largest employer paying sub-standard wages in this country.

I understand our unemployment rate is around 10% now, and that's only counting documented workers, the ones DILHR knows about, which excludes illegals and persons not eligible for unemployment compensation.
