Heavy .308 loads?
« on: April 03, 2009, 11:24:02 AM »
Anybody ever try 170 grain or bigger in their .308 handi?

Just curious, since the heaviest i ever tried was 168 match. It was ok but 165's done better.

Just wandering if anybody tried heavier and liked their results.

I found the same thing with the Nosler 165's, it didn't like 150's or not really 168's.

What kind of powder are you using? I tried Varget, but mine loves H335.

I've shot the 168gr TSX match in my 308 bull barrel with Varget, accuracy was excellent, although the rifle needs some forend work,  it's about the same length as a 180gr jacketed bullet.  Those 6 shots were two loads ½gr 3-shots each, top three and bottom three, all shot in succession as quick as I could reload to see the effects of barrel heat on the bull barrel. I've shot the 200gr Nosler partition in my 30-06 Ultracomp which has the same 1:10" twist, so 180gr bullets should work great in the .308W.

Thats exactly how my 168 loads strung out, they went up and to the left. I just assumed barrel heat up as it was my fourth test group, but then my 165 group went hole to hole, left and up.

What COL did you have with the 168. I put mine at 2.75 inches

I may try some heavier, you never know.

3.001" which is the Barnes recommended .050" off the lands in my barrel.

Shoot it without the forend, if it doesn't string, it's the forend causing the problem, Handi 101 basics, if it still strings, work on the load.  ;)

Don't know the twist on Handi 308s, but a 1-10 should stabilize 210 Amaxes.  They are relatively cheap and if a 160+ grain TSX stabilizes the Amaxes might.  The BC is .648 (at least) and I've seen them over 2400 fps from a 308...and they shoot well for a long ways.

Nice pics gendoc! You know i'm writing that one down to try.

I'm going to try some testing with some heavier bullets, who knows. Just another reason to go shooting.

Also going to try shooting with hand guard off, never have tried it, but we'll see what happens. I'll post some pics by next weekend on results.

By the way, my wife thinks i'm nuts for shooting all the time. She keeps asking why i practice so much. She'll just never understand the addiction. :-\ :-\ ;D

Ok, me and RC went to our personal range today , which is maxed out at 742 yards. We were going to push it out to 700 yards no matter what. We had always got hung up at and ran out of ammo at 500 yards, but today was the day to see what happened.

We started out at 300 to make sure we were at zero on our turrets. Went good there, went to 400, both shot well there too. 500 was next, all went well. Then we made the jump to 700. WOW. :o Thats a long way out there!

We checked our ballistic tables and reset our scopes and let it fly. I shot 1.5 MOA at 700 yards! :o :o ;D

Even with the wind picking up to about ten mph it was a good group. Then we went back to 700 and started shooting at those polymer praire dogs 4''x6''. It is one of those that you can shoot over and over. Would have not believed it would stand up to .308 and .300 WM  shots but it did. Getting some more of those. We never hit the thing out at 700 but it sure was fun trying. Looking thru the spotting scope we were all over it and just missing.

I could kick myself for not taking the paper of the board and getting pics because no one will believe me. But it won't be but a few days till we do this again. Taking camera and video camera this time. will post both.

Thanks to all the ones that helped me out with answers to my previous posts. Especially gendoc  ;) And thank goodness for all the info in the stickys!

Here are some of the things that i did to my Survivor .308. O-ring on the forearm, polished the barrel, lightened the trigger, home made adjustable cheek peice, limbsaver butt stock.

And heres the load i used, Hornady 168 gr A-max, H335 powder, Winchester brass, Remington primers.

Pics and videos next time. ;D

gendoc, Where did you get the stocks in that picture?  Beautiful!  Want to put those towards the top of my list. Where can I find closer pictures? Thanks  Think I just found them if they are thumbhole from factory. The gun in your picture looks great. I shot at Tucson rifle club a few years back. They have a 1000 yd range. I didn't get to shoot it but it sure was a long way to the targets. I spent a week out there shootin but not on that range. Looks like you guys are dialed in on the long shots. Always wanted to do that. Hope I get the chance soon. Good Shootin!

As a newbie reloader, it boggles my mind about the results of bullet vs. powder vs. rifle.
I love it. Cant wait to see my own results.
I am still at the 'starting load' stage and have only about 30 loads i have played with.
Couldn't tell you compost from cartridge now but having fun...
THANK YOU ALL for the advise I have gotten so far. EXCELLENT!
