New Member to this here Board, Hi y'all.
« on: April 03, 2009, 10:28:28 AM »
I have been lurking around this board & threads for several years now, and decided last week to join y'all.

Been shooting Single shot Cartridge Rifles for the past 40 years, and bought my first Handi last year.
I was visiting my local toy store and on the used rack was this Handi in 44 mag. The piece is like new and had been fired very little. About three Weeks later I was in the store again, well I walked out with my first Handi. Mine was made in 2006 according to H & R.
I sent it in last Year for the barrel accessory program. Had the action fitted for two additional barrels. I bought a .308 barrel and had them install open sights. At present this barrel sports a 2-6 compact scope. However the iron sights are sighted-in for 100 yards. I have quick mounts on the scope medium height. This way I have a back-up in case the scope fails. I think it was an additional $45.00 for the installation of Williams front & rear sight. When H & R had the piece I requested they do the trigger/action work. This reduced the trigger pull, and the action is much smoother now.
The other barrel I had fitted to the frame is a 12 ga. Turkey barrel 3 1/2" chamber W/ screw-in internal choke tubes.
I use & shoot the 44 mag. the most. I reload for my Rossi 92/44 Lever carbine & my Ruger Super Blackhawk 44. All shoot the same loads.
I also am a Cowboy Action shooter and active in two SASS/CAS clubs,I shoot about three matchs a Month.
My CAS firearms are a pair Colt third Generation 44-40's with seperate 44 special cylinders. The Rifle is a Cimarron/Uberti 73 Carbine in 44-40. And my Shot gun is a Winchester 97 16 ga.

So far I will just be content to lurk some and mosey around a bit.
I am also active on the Levergun.com site, y'all have a very fine Board here.

I have learned alot about Handi's here.

Thanks, Guys.

As indicated by your handle and noted by Rusty, you shoot from the port side, and it's mighty good to have you around!  The release latch on a Handi falls directly under your left thumb, making these little rifles even better for us than for our right-handed brethren & sistren.

I hope your .44 has rifling that takes to cast bullets.  Nothin' better than a Handi for flingin' big lead slugs downrange!  Just ask they guys who shoot .45-70s . . . I'm still working up to that level, but for now the .357 Max is my best cast-bullet Handi. All the fun and half the recoil!

And it does shoot lead very well. The bore slugs .429" across the grooves. I load and shoot a Laser-cast 240gr. SWC sized .431". Shoots very well, long range. ;) (200 and better) This is not a fast load, just slow and accurate.

What loads are you shooting best in your 44Mag?

All my loads are home-grown.

I reload a 240 gr.Nosler JSP, with H110 or 296. And a general purpose lead load that is a Laser-Cast 240 gr.SWC, using Alliant Unique powder.
I have found the 240 gr's are the most accurate in my 44's.

I shoot the same loads in my Handi as I do in my Rossi 92/44 carbine and my 1973 three Screw Ruger Super Blackhawk. All shoot the above loads very well.

The laser-cast 240's are sized .431", The Rossi's 92 barrel is .430". The Ruger SBH & the Handi are .429".

My other handi barrels are a .308 & a 12 ga. turkey barrel.
Doubt if I buy any more, unless of course one graces my presence at a good price and screams "Take Me Home".

I have been a TC shooter for the past 35 years, my Rifle barrels for the TC are; 24" barreled 22 Hornet,A 22" barreled 270 Ingram ( a 223 necked-up to 270) It shoots a 90 gr. Sierra hollow point. and a 26" custom barreled 22LR. My TC barrels are all Custom made by Dave Van Horn, Gilbert, AZ.

I also have a Ruger #3, started out it life as a .375 Winchester. I shot it for several years and had it Custom Barreled to 30-40 krag. This piece out shoots any .308 or 30-06 I have ever owned. (Clover leafs 180's at 100yds). I have take numerous Elk & Deer with this Rifle.
I also have a NIB Ruger #3 (Factory) 30-40 Krag which has never been fired. ;) It is not for sale, don't even ask. Not many #3's were made in 30-40 Krag.

I like Single Shots. ;D

Lefty: very happy to hear that your .44 lead-bullet load is accurate.  As for the Ruger #3, I have seen one (1) .30-40, at a gun show some years back.  Display only -- not for sale.  Why did that guy even put it on the table, except maybe to make me jealous?

It's a shame you haven't shot your factory .30-40.  May as well sell it and pay off your mortgage . . .
