Max distance for a 10mm auto in a carbine for deer?

       I'm in the process of building my AR 10mm w-16" barrel for hunting in western north carolina, i doubt i'll ever have a shot over 150yards but i don't know what range i should be limiting myself with it.  I'll be loading my own so i will keep the velocity as high as i can with out lossing accuracy, so i am between 155 & 180gr. I am going to use hornadys XTP's as people seem to like their performance on game.   So say i'll have the 180grs shooting around 1500fps and the 155's alittle faster, so what distance would you use them at. Most of my hunting would be in deep woods but it may open up sometimes.

Last thing i want is to wound a deer and have it die slowly if i try to out shoot the gun.

I'd think with proper placement 180g XTP at 1500FPS MV will be fine at 150yds.

im curious to see what you actually get for velocity. A small case like a 10mm burns its powder quickly especially considering the faster powders most use in the 10mm. Ive got a feeling your going to be looking at more like 1400 fps with 180s. Also id be careful with bullet placement up close as those bullets are designed to open at 40 smith velocitys and may be a bit violent at those velocitys. If it were me id consider it a 100 yard max gun. Also if it were me id be shopping for a heavier bullet. Something around 200 grain. A good cast 200-220 grain bullet at 1400 fps would make an excellent load for deer bear and pigs. Dont worry about cast in an Ar ive been shooting them for a while in my beowulf and theyve given me no problems at all.

Thanks for fixing the link Camp, do you have any experiance hunting with your 10mm?

No never shot bigger game with it only shot gophers/rabbits/grouse/rocks/trees/etc and I used the 135gr loads listed in the PDF file when I did this.

I carried a 6" Barsto barreled Colt Delta Elite & a 5" KKM barreled G20 for remote area animal defense for several years but never had to use it to defend myself or hunt with.

I now carry a Ruger SRH in 454 Casull that I had the barrel shortened to 4.25" and shoot 405gr Beartooth WLNGC's @ 1330fps.
