In my experience, there is a very, very significant difference in the recoil of a .375 JDJ with 270's @ 1950-2000 fps vs a .309 JDJ with 165's @ 2400. Even a 220 @ 2200 fps is heavier than the .309. Naturally, though, there is also a significant difference in killing power on large game that makes that recoil worthwhile. My .375's aren't for sale.
My 14" SSK unported .309 JDJ barrel runs 165 Nosler bt's @ 2400 using Re 15 without problems, but each barrel is potentially different. I once owned a stainless T/C Hunter 12" barrel that SSK rechambered to .309 JDJ. It was unsatisfactory to me from the standpoint of both accuracy and velocity. My memory is quite hazy on this, as I sold it at least a dozen years ago, but I think I was getting about 2200 fps with 150's - not all that much better than a 14" .30-30 would have yielded.
Personally, although I've tried 12"ers ( and still have one in 6.5 JDJ and another in .45-70) I prefer 14" barrels in Contenders chambered for bottleneck cartridges. The velocity is greater, and the muzzle blast is a bit further from the face. For most straightwalls, I prefer 10".
