Contender hammer ?
« on: March 29, 2009, 12:51:32 AM »
Would someone who has an early model, with the firing pin selector switch in the face of the hammer,  post a picture of the side(s) of the hammer.  The reason I ask this is because I suspect that I've lost a screw.
And yes I've been called screwloose among other things.
The other day while at the range I found that the firing pin selector was rotating on it's own.  That's why I suspect what I do.  Previously I've had the screw on the back/underside of the hammer come loose but found that in time.  Now if there is a screw missing, what would be the size/pitch/length?  I'm gonna be placing an order with Brownells soon so I could just add that to it.  Worse case scenario, I'll just replace the hammer.
Yesterday was the first time I've attempted to disassemble a frame completely and now I know WHY you need a slave pin for the hammer spring.
Thanks for any and all info.

The screw is in the "hollow" in the back of the hammer. Look at the gun from the back and you should see the screw head----------if it is still there.

Contact TC customer service by email to see if you can obtain a new one.

Frank,
The screw on the backside of the hammer is still in place.  I put Loctite on it when it came loose the last time.
The firing pin selector has to be under some sort of pressure in order for it to not rotate except when your changing from rimfire to centerfire.  Something has to keep it in place so to speak.  A spring loaded pin perhaps.

A spring loaded pin perhaps.

You are close.  There are two detent balls and a spring that appear to go inside the hammer nose (rotating piece).  They may have gotten lost if yours came apart.  The exploded diagram in my manual lists them as #51 hammer nose spring and #52 hammer nose detents (2).  You may still be able to get these from TC but I'm not sure.  That's who I'd try first.

If these detent balls are present, you should be able to see them in the holes on the side of the hammer.  Rotate the hammer nose and see if the detent balls go by.  If you see the balls go by but they are not locking into the holes to hold your hammer nose in the correct orientation, you probably just have a broken spring.

Curtis,
Thank You, you nailed it.  One of the detent balls is missing.  Guess I'll make a call later to T/C and see what pieces and parts I can acquire.  Need some locking lugs for the one barrel.

Brian

As an update, I was told by Customer Service that any parts associated with the hammer or trigger require the frame being sent in to the factory.  Considering that I had sent this frame in last year, specifically for a hammer replacement, and it was sent back untouched along with a handwritten note, somewhat illegible, saying that it needed the 'easy open' conversion makes me leary about sending it back again.
I think I'll give James Henry a call later in the day.
