my first hog (160)lb fell to 6.5x55 140 gr partition. then a winchester trapper in 45 colt (300) gr cast. then 12ga slug,s then 357mag (180)gr cast, from my contender carbine.out of 19 retrieved i only lost two. one with a slug, and one with the 45colt. it,s hard to say what one i like the best. the 357 is out of proportion, you wouldn,t think it could kill as good as the rest but it sure does, out of the 22 inch barrel, it goes a little over 1750fps. and kills like a big gun. i hunt in florida swamp land and rarely get long shots. most are under 50yds, with my longest at about 120yds.

I put together a custom T/C Encore in 2003 in 300 WSM for deer hunting etc.  My youngest son (9yrs.) has used it to drop 2 hogs while deer hunting.  I have used several calibers in the past- 270 win, 243 win, 30 30, and 12 ga.  After what I saw with the 300 WSM, I would put it up against anything in my safe.

i was in fla. a coulpe of weeks ago using a bow. i couldn't get a clear shot, so i pulled my glock 23 in 40s&w. at that point, i wished that i had bought a 10mm. it worked ok, though. next time, i will bring my contender 14" in 357 rem max.

I use a 444 for the brush, 30 06 out to 300yds., and a 300 Wby. past 300yds.. Longest shot was 560 laser measured yds.
On 2 Hogs a 100pd.and a 250pd. I used the only gun I had at the time, and it was a extremly accurate 22mag.   Both dropped on the spot with a neck shot at about 130 yds.  These pigs around here are very hard to drop on the spot with anything less than neck shot.

Anything that throws a nice, big chunk o' lead. Right now, I'd head out with my .45-70 Siamese Mauser custom with its 2.5X Valor and my heavy handloads with either a 405 or 500 grain slug.

Close in, like in hunting with dogs, my wife's old Ruger .44 carbine might get the nod as it's lighter and quicker handling. Or I might just sally forth with my old Winchester 94 .30-30 and heavy hard cast bullets.

I carry my T/C Encore handgun around the Texas Hill Country with a 376 Steyr barrel onboard, and a 44 Mag wheelgun on the hip for a back up.

Little ole Marlin 35 Rem...hog stopper No 1..

Factory 200 grain Remington ammo works good up to 250 lbs...then after that it's handloads or BuffaloBore 220 grain Heavy 35 Rems...shots are short 30 to 75 yards...swamp & brush...where the 35 Rem shines...

what  is  everyones  favorite  pig  gun and why?  or  what  is  your  dream gun for pigs

I;ll have to go with "Ditchdiggers" choice in calibers too (good choice)
1: Marlin 444
2:Weatherby Mk5 300 wby
3:Howa 300 Win Mag
4:my bow Oneida Aer0-force x80 shooting 34 inch 2419 #102lbs
5:my 12 inch Bowie after my xr600 in parked on top of boar
6:Browning Buckmark .22 (headshot from bike)
Now my dream gun........mmmmmmm  maybe a new S&W 500 revolver
for close stuff and a custom 30/378 weatherby for long range (i wish)

any caliber above.22 will work well (although i have shot hogs with 22lr,22wmr,222rem,22-250,220 swift)however for 1 shot stops any of these work great 25/06/6.5x55,243,270(awesome),30/06 etc etc

personal choice...on calibers and fav weapon and personal skill

remember placement is what makes it all work.

Good Hunting everyone 8)

Dang Headshooter, your arms are longer than mine. I  shoot a Jennings Carbon Extreme XLR at 84 pds. ,a 32 in. 2514 arrow at 296 fps. I'm getting older now and I'm starting to shoot a Browning Maxim at 70 pds. and its a lot easier for me. I also use a 9" Bowie  for the up close and personal stuff.(for the big cats where I hunt in New Mexico) Just dont tell me that your're 6' 3"  210 pds. and 62 yrs old.  Catch you later  Digger

headshooter,

Another Oneida shooter has come forth.  Great bows.  Have you tried the Black Eagle yet?  Easiest drawing bow ever, even easier than the Aero-Force.  I started out a number of years ago with the Oneida Eagle(easiest drawing bow I could find) then went to the Aero-Force(even easier to draw than the Eagle).  Then the wife bought me a Black Eagle and it is the easiest drawing bow ever.  Less strain on the back and arms and it has got to be the easiest bow to tune of any I have tried.  If you get the chance try one of the new Black Eagles, you won’t regret it.  Lawdog

It's flat shooting hard hitting easy  to draw.

No I haven't tried the black eagle, i tend to use equipment till it absolutely can't be used or fixed anymore lol.....I was an avid recurve shooter..Ibought a pro hoyt hunter #55 when i was 13....and never even realised that i'd well and truly outgrown that bow...i was overdrawing it by 6 inches....and never thought about till, till someone mentioned it to me.

Anyway being a left hander and having a 34 1/2 inch draw made it difficult to find something that would fit...everything outthere is designed for 28-32 inch draw...so i found Oneida...i found i wasoutshooting everyone in accuracy and extreme fast kills on hogs.(and i'm not a fan of overdraw kits)

It would take an act of congress to be able to buy another lol (wife tells me i have too many expensive hobbies)

But i would love to try the black eagle.

Hey Headshooter, I just noticed that you ride a XR600 I ride a 650 DR Susie and a 660 Grizzly.I've got 7 pins on my bow that goes to 80 yds.and my average on the last 10 deer is 61 yds.,all 1 shot kills in the heart lung area. I bow hunt the lower part of New Mexico just about every year, and the cover is scarce down there. I going to go back out there in a month or so and check the hunting out ,and see if there's any 36" ones left in the area I hunt . But right now I'm stuck here in Okla. making the banker happy..  Digger

Hey Ditchdigger, sounds like you and I have a bunch in common there, I wish i could come with you ( carry the luggage lol), I just moved to SD, from LA and moved to LA from Australia, I've hunted everything in the south pacific, hunted white tail, coyote, rabbit, nutria, duck and geese in LA, and can't wait to get out there here in SD.

I know that New Mexico has some awesome hunting as do most states just knowing where to go...and here in the US the cost is pretty high especially if you don't want to hunt Public land, so unless you know someone it's a daunting task trying to get onto a great spot.

In Australia I was spoiled by being able to go hunting, pretty well anywhere anyplace anytime(i lived on 4000 acres ), had Hog,Deer,Goat, Dingo, Rabbit,Fox and some very large feral Felines to keep me amused.

But here in Sd, there is whitetail, mule deer and a bunch of other excotic species to hunt especially in the western part of the state.

But anyway enough rambling here, shoot me an email with some picks of New Mexico i'd love to see what it looks like down there and especially the game

Good Luck, I hope you get that big'un
