Mossberg 464 -- Anybody bought one yet?
« on: March 28, 2009, 09:52:17 AM »
Reading about lever actions lately I came across the Mossberg 464 which looks a lot like the Winchester 94 on the outside but is supposed to be "improved" internally.  Anyway, has anybody around  here bought or even fired one yet.  It looks like a good first deer rifle.

I haven't bought or fired one, but I have looked at several, and just wasn't impressed with the gun.  I'd go with a Marlin for a few bucks more.

I looked at one today and thought that it was not worth the price asked especially as I can find good condition 94 winchesters for less.

  Guys,

I have to agree.  Who could possibly need one of these?   They retail for $500 or more.  They claim to have improved internal parts.  Improved compared to what?  Since when has any Winchester 94, or Marlin 336, in good condition, failed to reliably cycle and eject???

This time of year, you can walk into any medium sized gunshow, and they will have several Marlins on the tables, in used very-good to excellent condition, for prices of about $300 to $375.  They will also have several used Winchester 94s on the tables, in used very-good to excellent condition, for about $325 to $400.

I' guessing that after 100 years of production, there are probably 5 very-good to excellent .30-30 Marlins/Winchesters in the U.S., for every person who is currently a deer hunter.

   Just my thoughts.

With only "hardwood" stocks offered, their lack of serious machine work, and gaps between the stock and action that would hide small children, they cannot be recommended over a decent used Marlin or Winchester.

Guys, you know Mossberg did this before with their 472, which is basically a clone of the Marlin 336.  It never sold well, and I doubt if the 464 will fare any better.

I've held a 464 and it just doesn't have the same feel as a Marlin or a Winchester.  I'd save your money.

Have to agree with everyone else here. External fit/finish and balance are good to my eye, but the action is pretty awful and the hammer has enough play in it to be scary :o Safety(ies) are rather annoying and the trigger is about average. I looked at one one day, then picked up a thirty year old Winchester 94 next to it; to me, the Winchester, even at it's age, was five times the gun the Mossberg is, and cheaper too. My recommendation is also to go with either a good used Winchester or maybe a new Marlin. I have a Browning BLR and it is a very nice gun, but is rather expensive. Likewise the new Henry .30/.30 rifles - very nice, damn close to my Browning, but quite pricey also. Supposedly the Mossie is accurate, but even if it is, I wouldn't want to shoot the thing...once you squeeze one off and work the action, any good feelings are likely to disappear real fast :'( :-\ Overall, a rather substantial disappointment, especially for an American-made rifle. On that note, I haven't read a bad review yet in the gun magazines about the 'Berg; I do notice however, that little mention is ever made of the gun's operation, smoothness, or build quality. Interesting... ??? :-\

Kind Regards,

~450 Marlin~

P.S. Nice lookin' Marlins you got there Halwg. That one with scout mount/scope on the left is quite interesting...is that truckbed coating on the stock? I have a Henry done up with that stuff, and it looks and feels great.
