22-250 problems
« on: March 28, 2009, 06:29:27 AM »
well let me start from the beginning, dec 08 i bought a new 22-250 Ultra varment fluted at a local gun shop and 2 40 round boxes of win.45g and got home and mounted a Leupold 2.5 X 10 variXIII and cleaned the bore. I bore sighted as usual and the first shot was on paper at a 100 so i  cleaned and shot again . the second shot was 4" from the first! so i cleaned again and the third was 2" the other way. the trigger pull was almost 8lbs and i noticed a large nick at the crown so i took the gun back to the gun shop the next day and the owner looked at it and we both agreed that he would send it back to H&R for them to check it out.
A couple of days later i called H&R and requested they do a trigger job and i ordered 4 extra barrels fitted while it was there which customer service said would be no problem
at all.so 3 months later i got a call from the gun shop that it had arrived and the crown
had been touched up and all 5 barrels were there so i loaded it all up and headed home to try it out. after cleaning and mounting the scope i shot the same win 45g and it was somewhat better(2"for 3 shots instead of 6") but the trigger was still 8lbs.so i did my own trigger job following the web site instructions and all went well and now its at 4lbs
but now the groups are still 2 to 3 inches with or without the fore end and i have tried
some handloads with 50 g Hornady vmax,36.0 varget and its still 2 to 3 inch groups.
so i tried  35.5 and 36.5 and still no change. what am i doing wrong?

I'd start by removing the scope and the base, then remounting the base as shown in the FAQs. If that doesn't help, try a different scope, before you can pin the blame on the rifle, you have to eliminate the other possibilities. If it still doesn't improve, it may need to go back to H&R, their standard is 2" 3-shot 100yd groups with factory ammo. For handloads, my fluted 22-250 shoots best with the 50gr Vmax and H4895, under 1" groups. Read thru the Handi Basics 101, make sure you have all the bases covered there, if it still won't shoot good, get H&R to fix it.  ;)

Have you polished the bore? If not try that and if that don't work try some loads with 55-70gr bullets. Check your twist and make sure it's a 1-14twist as I personally am a little skeptical of which 22cal bbl's they were using for what during the transition. Are your groups scattering all over? As a side note I am sending you a PM.What is the frame prefix letters on the ser.#?Kurt

yes phatinjun i did try 60 and 75g but it didnt like those either. the 75 hornadys keyholed and yes i polished the bore with jb and i have a borescope and although its not as smooth as i would like it isnt bad. this is my first 22-250 i have 223,243,6.5,270,308,30-06, 44mag and other than the 44mag they all looked pretty good as far as the bores are concerned.

Are you still cleaning between shots? If so there may be your problem. I clean my guns, but some shoot better a little dirty and all my Handis do. The first 3-4 shots after a good cleaning I don't even pay mind to where they went, well safely of course ;D
Try it a little dirty not nasty, but "well fouled".

You only mention one powder. Have you tried others? My go to load for the 22-250 is a 55Gr bullet and H380 Powder.....38Gr's of it. Its what the powder was NAMED for!!!!

I also agree with Troy-boy. Check that latch, uneven engagement can cause loose groups, same for a too tight for-end.

Good luck,

With all the things you done with the gun itself I would put another scope on it and see. I had one once that was the scope and would not of believed it til I tried it. Kurt

well i checked the lockup and it seemed fine so i took the scope rail off and sanded and did the locktight method and it does seem better. also tried a cheap wallyworld centerpoint scope and im now at an inch and a half at 100yds with fact win white box 45g so its now time to try the 50g vmax again and i guess ill have to invest in some h380 since i never used that powder.im also going to put one of my better scopes on it when i get some rings.i thank you all for the replies and will let you know how it does.
